I left my projector housing unpainted, but you can paint them if you want. Just be sure to mask off the actual lens very VERY well. A matte finish of any color is going to be the best use. Most go with black because it's dark and is the generic headlight mod. Back before people were doing projector retrofits, they were just painting housings black or "smoking" them.
I wouldn't recommend a glossy finish because the point is to eliminate the reflective properties of the 'chrome' surface. A glossy finish would just colorize the surface without changing those properties. Any style of plastic spray paint will work fine. I used Krylon Technicolor for plastics in a matte black finish. It went on glossy and then dried matte. This is my car after I finished the whole project. Black signal cover, black housings, chrome projectors. ![]() -C
