Possibly... It depends how you want to balance your top speed vs acceleration for a given engine power.
With a stock engine, if you want to go racing on a normal track or auto-x, you don't expect to be able to reach 100MPH at any point. So, it makes sense to have shorter gears, as you can accelerate faster. As you build up your engine's power, you will find that with the stock gearing, you will reach the car's maximal speed pretty fast. So either you can keep things this way, or you can go with a longer gearing to get you extra top speed at the expense of acceleration. My advice, go get Gran Turismo 4 or Forza motorsport if you have an xbox, buy a car, then a fully adjustable gearbox, and have a play around with the final gear ratio settings, see how it affects the car
