This may have been previously stated, but I didn't see anywhere in my manual for my 2008 Hatch base model on how to check the transmission fluid level, or anything like that. Would that imply is doesn't need changing according to Toyota?

I guess I would need to look at the required maintenance services intervals and see if it indicates a change is required.

yea technically Toyota says the transmission fluid should last the life of the car. That is total bs. It'll last about 60k at most, then you should change it.

In my distant past I worked in a transmission shop. Changing the fluid and filter were routine maintenance, and most people waited too long. Need/frequency depends on several factors; I can tell by the color and smell of the fluid when it's time for mine.

I just changed my 2007 hatchback's at 54,200 miles, and it was definitely time. Required about 3.5 quarts of Toyota ATF WS. I used a Fram FT1220 filter kit that was less than $14 from RockAuto.com, plus shipping. Looked just like the original. As mentioned, the filter _does_ have filter-media, and is not just a screen.

I like the provided drain plug in the pan. That will encourage me to replace a few quarts every year or two, but I likely won't change the filter again for many years.
