And the wheels on the bus go round and round....

As long as it meets API standards you can use either conventional or synthetic. There are avid proponents for both. Some folks say that the 1nz and its mated C50 or auto trans are not high performance enough to warrant synthetic. Any internal combustion engine or device that uses a lubricant can benefit from synthetic and you are also helping in a small way to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

A majority of my time is on the highway. With conventional oil, I noticed a lot of upper end engine noise when I would exit the highway and drive on the surface streets. The noise was about the same if the oil was new or due to be changed. Since switching to synthetic, the valve clatter is almost gone. Is this a good thing or not?! I don't know, but not hearing metal parts clatter around gives me some amount of peace of mind, even if it is false.
