I think most (or all) of the tax money goes into general revenue of the Provincial and Federal governments. This helps pay for medical/health, education and social service costs. The three main tax grabs are on vehicle fuel, tobacco and alcohol.
As an example, at birth, we all get a medical card that covers doctors, hospital services plus any hospital supplies while in hospital. While we do complain about taxes, we do get some services.
My biggest complaint is that in the Greater Vancouver Regional District they pay an extra 17 cents a litre in transit tax, yet the difference in price between were I live (outside the GVRD) and the GVRD is 9 cents a litre. Why am I paying an extra 8 cents a litre.

Do taxes on tobacco and alcohol also vary by location? A gas station attendant in New Jersey (can't remember if in was between 2006-2010 or in 2013) told me that New Jersey is able to have a lower gas tax than nearby states because they make up for it by having a higher tax on packs of cigarettes.
