Will they just give you the part and let you do the replacement yourself? It seems like every time I take my car somewhere they always break something. I'd rather do the work myself if they'll let me.

No. Most manufacturers do recalls voluntarily (or at least appear to be so) but really what happens is after an investigation is completed by the National Highway National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and a part/car is determined top be unsafe and could cause harm, NHTSA tends to persuade the manufacturers to fix the problem at no cost. If the part is not fixed voluntarily, they are ordered to do so by the courts via the NHTSA. Unfortunately you can't perform the fix yourself as the NHTSA has to track the fix via the dealer which has all the cars information on file. This ensures a qualified technician for the car manufacturer has performed the service. It's a guarantee for the car manufacturer, the part manufacturer (not all parts of a car are made in house from a car manufacturer) and the NHTSA all together.
