It was a learning process, as much as anything, so I'm not too worried about getting it back to its original state.

Turns out the damned thing is splined all the way through, as well as having a liberal coating of threadlock. If you're so inclined to rebuild your kit, I would advise a bit more caution than I used--the acetylene torch was good and blue, and was applied directly to the coupler for almost a minute. You can probably get away with propane/butane, just try not to make the metal change color--that means you're annealing (softening) it.
