Another issue that needs to be addressed is dry rot. Like all rubber, it gets brittle over long periods of time. Being that your car is an 09 and you joined the website in 08, I can only assume that you purchased the car brand new in late 08. So your tires are at least 7 years old probably.

To run your tires bald that are that old is an accident waiting to happen. First person that pops in my mind is Astroman. Remember he bought some really old throw on tires that he used for traveling. He was trying to be cheap and he got a blowout on the highway.

STORY TIME!
Just image one of your rear tires blows out during a 40 mph turn on a 2 lane road with oncomnig traffic. You take this road every day for the past 8 years and you know exactly what speed and angle you need to turn the wheel to make this turn and can do it without even looking. During this turn, your phone rings. You don't answer it because it's not safe to talk on the phone while driving. But is sitting right there on the center console. You just go to reach for it to check to see who it is and nothing more. Maybe your wife or kid calling, whatever. That split second you reach for that phone and looking down, that outside rear tire blows out. Now your rear end is drifting into the other lane, but you got this. The other car in the other lane coming up doesn't see any of this happening because she too has driven this road 1,000 times and is currently looking over her shoulder to give her baby a toy he dropped. She is in her lane no worries but your rear end is not. She never had a chance to make any evasive actions that she could have if she was looking straight.

No one probably died, and probably not even a scratch, but now you have 2 wrecked vehicles on the side of the road. Probably not totalled but some damage. Deductable is probably $500, but since you are in the money saving buisiness, I would assumed you opted for the $1,000 deductable for a better 6mo rate.

So instead of paying $150 now, you could be paying 5 times that amount later. Who knows, nothing may never happen. You saved $150 now for another 2 years. You can not predict these things, but you can help make them preventable.

I work in the claims department of an insurance company. Been seeing auto claims for about 15 years.

One thing I see over and over, "I drive safe, I don't really need insurance." Until the day comes and they need it. I've seen some very terrible things. The latest involved a woman being scalped. No kidding. Top layer of head was scalped. Nasty stuff.

People not wearing seatbelts? Yeah, I've seen some crazy stuff from that. Worst was a mother/grandmother that was thrown out of a minivan in the freeway, while her family watched, and she was run over by 2 or 3 different cars.

Driving on bald tires? Yup, seen some stuff there too.

I really want to say thanks for having my safety and welfare in mind!

But Im not interested in worrying about something (tire blowing up) that has about a 1 in 250,000 chance in happening. (chance of getting hit by lightening: 1 in 10,000) My tires are always 35 psi and I never exceed 45 mph.

Maybe you could try and talk my wife out of playing the lottery! (one in 80 million) I figure shes spent over $1000 over the years doing that. And she says "But its just $1 a ticket!" No now its $2 a ticket and she buys ~10 tickets a month!

Totally crazy! Just think what you could spend $1000 on.

As long as Im DESTROYING you with playing the odds lets talk about recalls! Heres how 90% of all recalls work. One person in 50,000 has a problem that's scary so about half the time they issue a recall. What does that involve...100 cars out of a million? ! car out of 10,000? So most of the time Im not really interested in the hassle of taking my car in to the dealer. And 75% of recalls are NOT what I would call safety issues.

Car insurance? Got that! Ive saved about $10,000 over the years not getting collision. When I bought the Yaris 0% interest over 5 years I had to get collision and now that its paid off I still have it.

So play the odds and don't let your fears rule your life is my advice.

I am not a statistics person, but that 1 in 250,000 chance you speak of is probably with all tires... I would think you are increasing your chances dramatically if you only used bald, 7 year old tires. I am sure you will have a better chance of getting a blow out than getting hit by lighting in your case.

I really think you missed the entire Insurance point I was trying to make, but whatever. Don't care. Not worth trying to explain it again.

I was having a bit of fun writing my little short story on my lunch break yesterday. I got carried away. You asked for our opinions and haven't read a single reply thinking this was a good idea, but in the end, you will still do what you want. Good luck with your adventures. I am glad I don't live anywhere near you, but not to say there isn't at least one of your types living in my city also.

Youre right on both counts.

I was hoping to get info on how long tires last on the rear of the car. On my 74 VW Beetle for instance, when the rear tires got down to no tread the tires would go another ~3000 miles before wearing through.

As a motorcyclist you have a lot more worries about "the other guy" than the person driving a car has. Its a lot healthier to assume they are going to kill you and adjust your driving accordingly, than to just drive blithely down the road assuming all will be well...

You have mentioned at that you are a motorcyclist and a pilot.
How is this relevant?
I have been riding more than 5 decades (Nortons/ducs). No class has ever issued anything positive about driving in/0n a poorly maintained vehicle.
Knowing this I would certainly not got near a airplane with you.
Do to my advanced years I will leave with this:
SPEED WAS HIGH
WEATHER WAS HOT
TIRES WERE THIN
X MARKS THE SPOT

Both are far more dangerous and require a lot more thinking ahead. So does driving on less than perfect tires.

Im thinking theres no X's in my future!
