I don't like the idea of having 8 bolts instead of 4. I'm also not a fan of having the wheel too much further out from the bearing in regards to bearing life.

That's why I like the hub spacers so muc. No extra hardware other than longer screws.

For the distance you would use, it's a myth about stress and bearing life.

For a hub spacer, your idea of washers is not ideal since you wouldn't have full face contact and all the stress would be on the 4 bolts only.
