Thanks for the advice. Would cleaning the throttle body and MAF sensor do anything for it? It's possible that I'm not describing the problem accurately. Is there anything that would have similar symptoms?

The fact that putting it in 3rd, rather than D makes it go away, says that it is tranny related. The TB and MAF would not be involved. You can inspect the connectors that go into the transmission to make sure none are damaged or corroded. Others have had issues with mice chewing through insulation on the wires to the tranny connectors.
