When it comes down to the running though do i need to go aftermarket with the ecu? Or is the stock one viable?

Eyeing up an exhaust system atm

To take advantage of the full Prius pistons compression you'll probably need a progamable aftermarket ECU. Maybe you can get away with using the stock one, but don't expect the same gains.

If you plan on keeping the 1NZ engine, i'd also suggest looking into lightweight pulleys or even a flywheel. It might not make any HP but it will certainly help with acceleration and help make the car "feel" faster.
