there are several threads on th forum about fitting the C160 6 speed gearbox. The frame needs some mods to clear the gearbox. Also the final drive ratio has a bigger reduction, so you end up with the engine revving faster for a given speed.

The 4 speed auto has a taller overall top gear, so the engine revs are lower at highway speed, but anything other than the slightest hill will cause the auto to drop back to third. At least that's what happens with the 2NZ-FE.

I know. But Kinoma's earlier comment sounded like a reference to the auto.

The five speed manual has a lower final drive, resulting in higher engine revs in top gear compared to the auto. The six speed manual hasa lower overall gearing thatn the five speed, so the engine revs will be even higher at the same speed.

Wow, that really sucks. However, I now feel a lot better about having an auto.

If you want an even higher final drive, one idea is to try to swap out the final drive from a Corolla automatic to a Yaris automatic. Both transmissions seem to have the same service manual and many of the same parts.

Saddly it's never been attempted as far as I know...
