Brake Pads

My 06 Yaris has 125K miles and is on its 3rd set. I think i had the OEM's replaced at 60K by a garage but they used cheap ones which i replaced at around 96K with pagids from Euro car parts. I serviced the front brake hardware and changed the fluid at 110K miles and they seemed like they had plenty of wear left in them.

I think my mechanic also rebuilt my rear brake shoes at around 70-80K. There was still 3-4mm of material on them when i inspected them last April.

he ripped you off! I think they are 5mm new. I inspected, cleaned, and adjusted my rear shoes on my last car (civic) every 40-50,000 miles (48-80,000km) but never replaced them. I bought them twice, pulled the drum, then returned shoes to the parts store. I sold the car, with factory shoes, at 338,000 miles (544,000km)

unless you drive with the parking brake on, or you have a leak from the wheel cylinder, you should never need to replace the rear shoes...

I run a fleet of over 50 toyota yaris cars for a delivery company. Typically the fronts and rears wear close to eachother. We replace the pads and shoes at about the same interval. This is 70,000mi to 110,000 miles. These are fleet cars that are after loaded with parts and it's in the Seattle area so it's constant stop and go. These are all 2012 to 2016 models. I cannot speak to the older yaris. They also are all manual trans. So better life than auto trans for brakes due to downshifting and using the engine to brake more. They have very solid brakes. It seems like the first thing to break is the manual trans 2nd and 3rd gear Synchro rings before anything else. Next is brake pads and shoes. Then the clutch at about a hundred and twenty thousand miles.

I don't understand why people use the transmission to slow down. Brake pads are way easier to replace than shredded synchros.

On long/steep downhills, it's useful to maintain a proper coasting speed without playing with the brakes.
