I'm at least as much of a novice as you, but here's what I can add:
Inspect your coolant every 18 months or 15,000 miles.
The transmission fluid dipstick is small and slightly hidden. (This applies to automatic transmission fluid. Manual might be different.) Standing facing the engine bay, it's about a third of the way from the right side, close to the front fender, and down inside the engine bay about eight inches. Check the fluid while the car is warmed up and idling. The dipstick says the fluid should not be changed under normal use. But you can still use a paper towel to see whether it's a nice, bright color (good), or dull, or black (less good). Check it every 3 years or 30,000 miles.
As far as I can tell, the Yaris does not have power steering fluid. It's an electric system.
