Yes, your mileage will go down as your operating temp oil weight is going from a 40 to 50. It shouldnt hurt your fuel efficiency a ton, but it will have a negative impact.

Why the heck would you want to run a 10w50 in the 1nz? Even with 300* oil temps you would be way out of oil pressure spec and have potential flow issues. On top of that your oil temps would be much higher

Thanks tmontague for your reply. Would like to clarify that 10W50 is only a scenario. My yaris (1.5L 1NZ Auto Trans) is currently used Toyota recommended 5W30 oil since the 5W40 (used up to 20k kms) is not available anymore in the dealership.

So, what engine oil grade would you recommend for summer and heavy traffic situations that will increase fuel efficiency and protecting the engine? The car is 3yo and 52k in its odo. Just like Bony_ahmed Im considering to switch to 0W40 if it is safe and can satisfy those aims.

thanks a lot in advance.

Hi, just use 5w30 conventional lube oil (non-synthetic) if you live in Cebu City area.. I am a native of Cebu too but currently my family is in KSA.. Cebu City driving, you cannot exceed 100kph at most you are driving at 60-80kph and normally you are in traffic areas. So to save money better use dino oil and replace it every 5000km, that is simple, it doesnt hurt your pocket... But if you plan on travelling daily just like i do for +100km then i suggest to go for fully synthetic 5w30.

The manual says to use 5w30 for vios/yaris 1.3L in our region.

hi kababayan rayfloyd170,

Yes, I live here in Cebu (particularly in Lapu-lapu). The car has an average usage in a week of around 370kms and can reach or even exceed 100kph while travelling to north (100kms away from Cebu City) on weekends.

Traffic situation particularly on Saturday afternoon is awful. Sometimes it took 1hr from here to SM Consolacion (approx. 11kms) when in fact you can just have it 15-20 minutes only if you drive at dawn. So Im thinking to switch to 0W40 if this is good for fuel economy and at the same time protect the engine from the extreme heat cause by heavy traffic and the summer.

I would rather stick to the manual which says 5w30 oil, 370kms a week and with excess speed of 100km/hr is nothing for a conventional oil as long as you replace it regularly at 5000km interval... but if you have the extra money then why not go for 5w30 fully synthetic which is more than 2.5x the cost in our country... however you can benefit one thing and that is TIME in going to the shop since you will visit the shop for oil change once every 10k km.

As for engine protection, during heavy traffic in Cebu/Mactan, i believe fully synthetic oil is excellent but conventional oil is more than sufficient to do the job too.. Unless you rev your engine at past 3500-4000 all the time (above 120km/h) even at this condition i see my coolant temp at average 85-87deg C.. Oil temp could be higher let say +10C and can be handled by Conventional oils with ease..

Regarding your question on 0w40, if that is written in your vios manual then go for it. Otherwise you will have warranty problems if your car is new and under warranty.

I have seen a lot of guys in this forum use 5w30 with their yaris/vios... In middleast (hot weather averages 45-50degrees during summer) Toyota manual says to use 5w30...

Fuel economy will be out of your hand when you are driving in traffic (like cebu/mandaue/mactan areas). Personally i tried driving on a free highway with my OBD and android phone as gauge and i have seen that during light traffic my fuel consumption goes down to ave 11-13km/liter... during heavy traffic (comparably in cebu city area/mandaue city) maybe 9-12km/liter... But when i am on a highway and moving freely at 85-90km/hr my fuel consumption is very nice at above 18km/liter but if i rev the engine like 3500-4000+ to speed up like 120/130+ km/hr i will just average at 12-15km/liter...

Regards,
