Fuel smell after filling

There are hoses near the fill port they go to a charcoal filter which stores gas fumes. Probably some of the extra gas you were pumping in after the first click is going down that hose to the charcoal filter.

That can ruin the charcoal filter and the solenoid which turn things on and off in the system

It’s very unwise to pump gas after the first click
