guys on camaro forums and mustang forums are removing excess threads from bolts throughout the car. every bolt that is longer than it needs to be just cut it off with a grinder or sawzall.

most removed an average weight of around 45lbs...not including the dust that came off from saws or cutters.

another option is carbon fiber...it's cheap if you know what you're doing. otherwise, pay someone else to do it. hatch, hood, door skins...anything not safety or stucture related can be easily made of CF. hoods/hatches need to have break-away sections.

lexan is another option if you dont mind scratches...i guess you could put some clear 3m sheets on it to prevent scratches like the racers do. rear windows and hatch are legal, not the fronts or windshield are illegal in all 50 states tho.

every 100hp is about .1 seconds in the 1/4

lol... lets spend 40 hours pulling insulation and extra threads off of bolts to save 2 pounds. THEN lets spend a buttload of money getting lexan and cf and save a total of 50 lbs(if that - on my sedan the hood and trunk lid weigh almost nothing, the windows are just as light). I would do an A/C delete before lexan windows.

Remove your rear seats and spare tire, and call it a day. If you were at the point where anything else would help, you wouldn't be here asking questions.

I think you meant pounds, and then your formula only holds true for a very narrow range... I think a 1300 lb yaris with 100 hp will do slightly faster than mid 16s

what are some ways to remove excess weight without taking the back seat out? i def. don't wanna do that just because i have more than one passenger alot...

and how much would the intake run me total? is it worth the money for what your going to get out of it? and is there an impact on mpg?

Remove the sound system...all the wiring, the HU, and all of the speakers. For LB's, remove the rear window wiper and all of the things associated with it, wiring, motor, fluid reservoir, etc.

I'm too lazy to pick up my stock head unit again and feel what it weighs, but I'm guessing with everything you're not even saving 10 lbs. If you're willing to sacrifice tunes for 1/100th of a second on the 1/4 you bought the wrong car. Get a nice system, and have a quick release for the amp and sub(the only heavy things involved in most systems).

1)Remove your spare tire and replace with fix-a-flat.
2)Swap your battery for an ultralight battery (Odyssey, Braille)
3)Change to the lightest tire/wheel combo you can find/afford (rotating mass).
4)Never fill tank more than half-way. (except on road trips)

Hey I'm just trying to be helpful -- no need for sarcasm. If you're on a budget, just say so and suggestions will be relevant.

AFE intake is $174 shipped. I think it's worth the money, it adds a little power and sounds great. Same or better mileage, and you get a reusable, cleanable filter.

The AFE drop-in filter is about 50 bucks and opens up the airflow a little, but not as much as an intake system.

Heck, I'll sell you my Bomz aluminum cold air intake with filter for $60 (shipped). Look at my classifieds. I have pics and everything. It's just as good as the AFE when you consider the value. Basically, both are long tubes with a filter on the end and a MAF adapter, except mine is $114 less AND includes shipping.

NOS is always the best bang for the buck...500 hp for about a grand...but then again you gotta have the engine that can handle it.

any way, 50% for 500 bux aint bad. but it has upkeep. you gotta refill, you gotta reprogram, and you gotta run all kinds of wires and switches.

lotta ppl start with suspension. lots start with intake and exhaust. some start with weight redux or lighting or wheels/tires or whatever. lemme tell ya what, whatever you do, you better have supporting mods for whatever it is you're doin. if you're turbo'in ur car, you better have brakes, suspension, and programming, possibly forged internals.

personally, i'd start at the bottom...literally, and work up. wheels/tires, brakes, shocks/springs, exhaust, intake, then engine.

Guys, speaking about cheap mods, what do you think of installing this DaviesCraig EWP (Electric Water Pump) kit on the yaris? This kit can handle up to a 3.0L engine and can be digitally controlled (optional, sold separately), or otherwise run with the stock thermostat. Price wise I found some on ebay around the AU$180 mark (about 150US??). There is an instruction sheet provided and it looks quite DIYable..

Some of the benefits running EWP are:
- increased fuel economy (one less sob sapping the engine power)
- more power to the wheels (they claim 10kw (~13hp) on a V8 Holden)
- desired coolant temp can be preset (with the optional digital controller)
- can be set to run even after the engine is off (on track days)
