It is kind of weird. Plus everything varies from state to state so you have to make sure you know the law where you live.
When I still lived in Ontario, I had a Sentra with the darkest LEGAL tint allowed at the time. I think it was 35% front and 10% rear or something like that. Crossing the border into the US I got hassled a lot at the border in that car. Sometimes they would even ask me why I had such dark tint. Hey, it's legal in Ontario, so not much they could do other than ask questions. MI you can only have a 4" strip on the front windows, which seems pointless. Back windows don't matter at all as far as I can tell.

I understand that all modern glass blocks UV rays, nearly impossible to get glass that isn't.
Besides, is the tint just for looks, or what? I never trust a car or its driver if the windows are tinted, and I'm in Canada! |

I'm not sure about most modern glass blocking UV. I've heard this, BUT I've taken some long drives in modern cars, on HOT SUNNY days with the air conditioning on and the windows up, and still gotten some sun (not full on sunburn) on the left arm from the sun coming through. So, I dunno bout that one... As for the tint, most people get it done for looks, but it has other benefits. It keeps the interior cooler when it's hot, reduces interior surface fading and cracking caused by the sun, reduces glare, and so on. Also, there is some suggestion that it can reduce "smash and grab" type thefts because people won't break into a car unless they can see there is something valuable inside to steal. Plus it can be a benefit if you're in an accident, because the tint film holds the glass together and keeps glass from flying around. SO, I personally like it, but cops and customs DO NOT.

I'm a bit concerned about my 2010 I bought last week in IN. It had been tinted there where I think they allow 30% on all windows. The windshield is less. But after reading on here it seems my front side windows are in violation of MI law. I think I'll drive it until warned or ticketed.

I got a ticket on the LIE once for tint. It was for the driver's front window only. I was running 5% limo though (stupid). I had to go to the DMV in Amityville. They have garage bays there and can verify equipment violations have been fixed. I removed ALL the tint and was then given a test sheet which I mailed in with the ticket. Other people had'nt removed their tint yet and were issued razor blades and had to scrape it off on the spot!
This was a LONG time ago though. How dark was the tint you had???

It is the UVB rays which actually do most of the tanning This link should clear things up a bit. ![]() http://www.skincancer.org/understand...a-and-uvb.html |

So according to this, UVA "is the dominant tanning ray" and "can penetrate clouds and glass", while "UVB rays do not significantly penetrate glass". So I guess when people say that glass blocks UV, I think of ALL UV, and apparently that's not true if this article is accurate.

Same as down here if a cop clears his radar gun before you sign a speeding ticket and you ask him to show you what he clocked you at, they can't hold you to it...but it really pisses them off

I've been pulled over once and I said "really, I bought it this way???" and told him I'd take it off first thing when I got home and he didn't ticket me.
