When adding a rear sway bar to achieve the improved handling, would the addition of a larger-diameter front sway bar be recommended as well?

considering this car does not have a rear bar I do not think it would be necessary to upgrade the front bar. However if there is a big difference in the bars then if the front bar is to thin compared to the stronger rear bar then you may experience some understeering.

the basics of anti sway bars really short

stiff front = more rear traction
stiff rear = more front traction

side effect of stiff front = less camber change during compression which is a good thing.

So, who's going to be guinea pig?

Caution to those of us who are in the snow belt, too much swaybar in the back is a recipe for disaster.

There seems to be some mixed angst over this rear sway bar thing. I had a Progress on my xB and it was perfect! It kept the tail from wagging and gave it a more neutral steering effect. Lift off the throttle and the tail would rotate out in a CONTROLLED fashion.

If you increase the front along with the rear you have essentially done nothing but reduce body lean and kept understeer the same.

companies like Hotchkis who DO sell sets, IE the scion xA/B have severely undersized the rear bar.. no one wants to have people look down on their company for making spin happy econoboxes.
