the SEVERE GEAR is GL-5 and not safe for synchros , could make for difficult shifting and damage internal parts . The MTG is fine , states that here under PRODUCT DESCIPTION www.amsoil.com/storefront/mtg.aspx . Mentions TOYOTA as well .

I think Toyota says GL-4 and GL-5 are both okay for their transaxle, but it just makes sense to use the GL-4 that's designed for transaxles/transmissions with their soft metals and leave the GL-5 for the differentials. I know that the expensive LubroMoly GL-5 75W-90 (made in Germany) didn't do much to improve my shifts.

I think I'd stick with the GL-4 as well.

used MOBIL 1 ( 75w-90 , GL-5 ) in the 2000 PRIZM ( Corolla ) with a speed manual which is similiar to that of the YARIS and threw of the synchros making for grinding when shifting to different gears , downshifting , and the clunk / harder engagement ( grinding ) into reverse worse . When replaced with the REDLINE MT-90 ( GL-4 ) all that disappeared . As for when using the MOBIL 1 synthetic tranny fluid for the power steering in the PRIZM ( Corolla ) it worked wonders . Removed the old P.S. fluid after car sat overnight to withdraw and refill fluid at COLD mark of resorvoir with a animal medicine dispenser ( oral syringe : http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...cfm?pcatid=836 ) with a clear plastic air hose ( air pump for fish tank ) attached to syringe ( slips over end ) and drawed out as much of the old / mixed A.T. fluid as possible over period of time until most of the MOBIL 1 A.T.F was gone . That way it would clean and replenish with new fluid over time . The amazing part is that when the regular P.S. fluid in the power steering resorvoir ran hot it would read at or a bit over the HOT mark . When applied the MOBIL 1 synthetic A.T. fluid it read a little over halfway point , COLD mark , when hot ( less friction = less heat = less expansion of fluid ) . AMAZING . NO leaks ( checked often ) . The steering became more responsive ( like that of electric power steering ) and with less effort at slow speeds ( inertia ) . When turning the wheels at a standstill there was no squealing as well . I think it may have helped with gas mileage due to less resistance in turning ( less gas applied to turn , coast ) . If you look in YARIS owners manual it states that one of the benefits of electric steering is for fuel economy . If not mentioned in YARIS owners manual , it did state it in our '07 PRIUS owners manual that was traded in for '08 YARIS sedan . So , if have an older car with A.T. fluid for power steering I highly suggest the MOBIL 1 synthetic A.T.F. ( or other ) for use . I think you'll be quite pleased in the steering performance .

during this time of using MT-90 and MOBIL1 A.T.F. for power steering the PRIZM got a little over 43 miles per gallon . The conditions were : 70% hwy. / 30% city ( speeds up to 70 m.p.h ) , 2 people 90% of time , hot and humid , Tire Pressue : 34 P.S.I. ( Cooper Trendsetter SE ) , GULF 93 octane , and a dose of CHEVRON Techron . The motor oil was regular PENNZOIL 5w-30 . The miles were from looking at '08 YARIS and COROLLAs . The gas mileage that fill is very close to both our '08 YARIS ( automatic sedan and 5 speed manual L.B. ) for best fuel economy . They're best so far has been a little over 44 m.p.g.. Miss that car . Traded in for the '08 Liftback with 5 speed manual . The clutch was easier in that too .

So Redline MT-90 is the best for tranny, better than AMSOIL?

I'd say the MT-90 and Amsoil's GL-4 75W-90 are both close and very good, probably both are better than my Pennzoil GL-4 75W-90, but I wouldn't care to breakup the theme that I got going on.

PENNZOIL now has a GL-4 synthetic gear oil , http://www.pzlqs.com/Tech/Pdsheet/Do...E75W90GL-4.PDF and http://www.pennzoil.com//products/ge...#SyntheticGear , wonder if this is as good as their PLATINUM motor oil that gets very good U.O.A.s at www.bobistheoilguy.com . May have to give this a try in the future . Should cost less than AMSOIL or REDLINE , may be difficult to find . Sorry to break the mold . Couldn't resist .

I discovered it was hard to find. Had to special order mine from Napa. It's in my sig but LubroMoly is what's actually still in my transaxle. I'll switch it out next week. I don't know the cost yet. I didn't ask.

Still waiting on Napa to give me a call when the Pennzoil comes in...they said 1 week, which I think would have been the 13th.

waiting is .
give us the scoop once it's been installed . May want to give it a try myself over time . Keep seeing very good U.O.A.s for the PLATINUM motor oil at B.I.T.O.G.. Would think their synthetic gear oil be a good performer too . Hang in there .

Can't do the synthetic Pennzoil GL-4 75W-90 right now. After 2 weeks I called Napa again and they said it couldn't be shipped because it's against UPS's policy to ship oil, grease, etc ...funny, UPS shipped my ENEOS to me, in the ENEOS box, and about $3K worth of AMSOIL products to a friend of mine. I've decided to go with the AMSOIL GL-4. Should be here in a day or two.
