Just Picked up Me NEW Yaris yesterday

YES its true I FINALLY picked up my new 2010 Carmine Red 3 door Yaris 5 speed yesterday and absolutely love it. I put 250 miles on it already and various speeds and it I still have 1/2 tank of gas...So does that mean that I should expect 500 miles to a full tank???

Has anyone noticed that the manual transmission sounds like a toy car when its in reverse???

Does anyone know where to get some kind of guard and/or protection to put underneath the door handles?? My fiances ring and finger nails put a couple of scratches under the passenger door handle.

you can get a protective sticker for that spot on ebay or they make handle covers too that you can pickup there

the first tank usually has great mpg for some reason

i usually get 35-38 mpg so at 11.1 gallon you can expect like 388 till you are dry i usually fill up at about 360mi

if you grab a scan guage and drive for max efficiency you could easy hit 40mpg or maybe 42 and get more out of the tank

Wow my black 2009 had scratches there when I bought it I didnt notice beforehand. Im thinking youll get less than 250 miles on the second half of the tank. When mine hits four bars it takes 6 gallons to fill it.

That is exactly like my Yaris.
I got mine in june and I have absoluly no regrets.

The noise in reverse is common with many cars and is absoluly nothing to worry about.

If you get no other mod, at least get a rear sway bar.

half a tank is exactly when 5 bars goes to 4 bars. should be about 200 miles
driven and 200 miles left. give or take a buncha variables.....

the first bar is dang slow to move, but my scangauge and calculations reveal the
gas gauge is actually accurate once it gets off the first bar, and half a tank is -really- half a tank (go figure)

I'm very impressed with the gas mileage so far. The dealer told me that the "i" in the vvt-i means "intelligent" which she equated to meaning that the engine will learn the way I drive, so I guess the gas mileage will change once it gets used to me?

So the rear sway bar is a good mod to get? Will that affect the ride of the car? Because as it is now it rides great, so far it seems to handle very well with a "nimble" kind of a feel.

It's probably the single most "must-have" mod recommended by those who've put it on. It will stiffen up the rear and help you corner even better making it even more nimble.

Your new toy

Congrats. Mine just got totaled on the 7th.

That noise you hear is actually because of the type of gear used for reverse. Most of the tranny has helical gears, which helps disperse the torque evenly across a number of teeth. With reverse, they just use a spur gear, which puts all the pressure on one tooth at a time. And since mechanical things need space to move, the space between the teeth causes the teeth to *clink* together (unlike helical gears). This sound in rapid succession causes the toy car sound you hear.

Congrats from me too.....Carmine Red rocks!!! I totalled my '09 Carmine Red hatchback a few weeks ago and will be buying a 2010 one very soon.

My '09 came with clear bra just about everywhere.....including under the door handles. It definitely helped control scratching.

I also highly recommend the rear sway bar. It really tightens things up in the twisties very nicely.....money well spent. I just wish it could have helped me when I hit that black ice!

The ECU will moitor you driving habits and tune it acordingly. either for more economy or more performamce.
For example: It you often go for WOT, it will assume you want performance over economy. Personally, I go for performance and the gas mileage is still great.

If you are happy with the ride, fine.
However stock, the Yaris has a great deal of body roll and under stear in turns.
A a rear sway bar eliminates this and makes the Yaris more fun and safer to drive
