that is exactly what i did. i was looking for a more sedate ride (road/engine noise) and overall comfort. with the telescoping wheel, i found the 09 corolla very comfortable and quiet for an eco car. i drove a fit, too. not as quiet and actually costs more than the corolla that i got.($15200) to keep the price of the fit near that, i would neet the manual transmission base model.

i didnt like that ithe manual fit was rated 33 mpg highway. its odd that only the base model automatic fit is rated 35 mph highway. all the manual transmission fits are rated at 33 mpg. all the sport models (auto and manual) are rated at 33 mpg. i found too many people on the fit forums getting mid to upper 30's hwy mileage. three tanks on the corolla right at 40 mpg, and a comfortable, quiet ride. i still did better with my yaris by about 2-3 mpg's, but my body is so much more comfortable.

if you want to know about yaris resale, get this: i bought the yaris new in june 2007 for $12800. 1 year and 3 months later and 21k miles and i got $11,100 trade in value. this was not in lieu of fiddling with the corolla price, which i got for $300 over invoice. i may have sold it for more privately, but not by much. for me it was worth avoiding the hassle.

The Corolla is a fine car, but too sedate. It kinda looks like a rental car, or a car driven by a retiree. A bit dull for my taste...

I configured a Fit Sport online and the price came out almost the same a a 2009 5-door LB S (both were fully loaded). They're both too expensive for economy cars though.

I think that the "economy" with the Phit and the Yaris is the gas mileage, not the price. If you want to buy an inexpensive small car, you might want to consider a base Hyundai Accent, which has become pretty reliable over the years, and has a great warrenty.

If you want cheap/junky/no-resale-value, buy an <ewww...> Aveo.

No. The Fit and the Yaris are Honda's and Toyota's lowest end cars. They are supposed to be economy cars.

Well, look, if you buy the base Yaris or the base no-phrills Phit, they are relatively cheap. I guess the word 'economy'--when referring to an automobile--is all rather subjective, no?

It's like when I was a kid, and I'd ask my father "is that guy rich?", and he'd always answer "what's 'rich'?"

Similarly, how do we define 'economy' car? Is the least expensive Mercedes Benz an economy car?

Some people have voiced that the front end makes it "ugly".

That front end also allows it to get subperb mileage.

As for it looking like a minivan So what. I loved my Odyssey!

Ido agree unless you pay under 13000.00 you pay way too much for entray level autocar. You can get used 2005 VW toureg for 15 with no miles!!!

Perhaps, except that the VW Toureg has a TERRIBLE reputation for reliability. If you don't mind that, I suppose it's a good choice....for you.

I think the 2009 Phits are Phabulous & beautiful!

. We had an '06 SCION XB and took a lot crap from relatives about its looks . TOASTER car , etc. . One relative said wouldn't want to be seen in it , sometimes ugliness has its pluses . Can't wait for the NISSAN " Cube " to arrive , get that to keep people from wanting rides .

The "box" shaped vehicles are ugly and I don't understand the attraction to them.

You can take it as a compliment, but it wasn't meant as one.

I know The cube shape is very efficient for giving lot of room in any size wheel-base. Look at VW Bus and Dodge sprinter. Maybe not so aerodynamic for Autobahn storming ( zoom zoom zoom). I like The first release xB is good vehicle maybe better than Vitz. Maybe the old white guy need pointy car to go with pointy head and lack of mound in his pants??

Yeah, I guess i just don't fit the flat-billed hat wearin', pants crotch hanging below the knees, fart muffler, obnoxiously loud stereo playin' xB drivin' stereotype.

Some people call my Yaris a "clown Car". who cares. Getting one tank of gas every 2 weeks makes it woth it. First full tank of gas i got 366 miles on it.
the joke is on them.

we get relatives saying . " I could fit that in the back of my S.U.V. " and had neighbors point at it and laugh , of course they're driving a 4 door G.M.C. pickup . They're the clowns for p*ssing away their money on gas and contributing to this energy / financial crisis ( earnings that could be used towards house , car payments or other ) , and supporting terrorist or totalitarian governments . PEOPLE JUST DON"T GET IT .
