ECU for the 1NZ-FE in the Yaris
I know that the ECU for the Scion variant is a 64-bit "learning" unit & the Echo variant is a 16-bit non-"learning" unit, my question is which will the USDM Yaris (LB mainly) have?
the reason that I ask is I know that the 64-bit one sucks for FI or NA tuning, & that you can't piggyback most aftermerket fuel computers, they just don't work. I'm hoping for the 16-bit version, because it can be piggybacked & is OK for tuning.

So what you are saying is that if it is the 64 bit one to mod it your going to have to get a entire new chipset. Ouch.

well, not really, then 16-bit Echo one should work fine. the 64-bit one does other things on the Scions that the Echo & the Yaris don't have, like TCS & VSC, so you wouldn't lose those because the car never had them.

I mean that you will need to change the chip.
If it is the 64 bit chip, it will need to be swapped out to get mods to work. |

Well, based on those handy Yaris Technical PDFs posted a while back, the Yaris ECM is a 32-Bit CPU, with a whole slew of piggyback ECUs placed throughout the chassis connected via a BUS...

So I read thru the PDFs & saw nothing about it adjusting to the driving style, but I still need to read up on ETCS it might compensate for the style & so the ECU doesn't need to. That would be a good thing.

I didn't know the Celica had drive-by-wire throttle. You learn something new everyday.
I know the Scion guys are limited by the 64-bit ECU, too. |

yup that would be it. The thing is that it is so fucking hard to tune cars with that on there because all of tese components are being adjusted there. There is no real way of avoiding the situation. The thing that will mess with it the most is if you get a SRI/CAI (short ram intake/cold air intake) it will set the ECU off and you will get the check engine light, one of the most common complaints on the 03 and up celica which introduced the DBW system. And auto companies are not likely to go back to the old cable throttles since emissions standards are so tough now.

Its not hard, as long as the demand is high, then people will start working on it.
All ECU today (well, most) are Learning ECU, it has nothing to do with the ECU *bits*, many(most?) auto people doesnt know computer quite well and thought that *more bits* is harder/smarter/better. Anyway, what they need to do, simple, pull the AFR table out, reflash it. but that requires alot of reverse engineering, of which, not many company going to take the *risk* to do (cuz Auto companies can sue you as long as they found that you reverse engineering their software) This is one of the problem right now, take my car, the rx8 as an example. so far, the ONLY piggy back system that works really well is the interceptor X(or, M800). E-Manage(NOT Ultimate, it simply does not work, and Greddy too lazy to do anything about it) works *somewhat* too but too many problems, most people with Greddy kit are screaming just because of that. Someone just found the AFR code inside the ROM, and trying to reflash it. so .... Oh yes, Im sure alot of xA guys mod their stuff, go scionlife.com and ask around. Im sure they have something. |

Good news... last I checked, Steve Millen was working on tuning Toyotas DBW CPU units, it was kind of a requirement in their IS project. In thier IS project, they were using the V8 out of a GS sedan and a Supra manual rear end... well, the DBW on the GS' V8 was tuned for an automatic transmission and made the manual a tricky drive, so they've been working on tuning the boxes, and as I understand it, the Toyota DBW systems all use a related chipset, so there is hope yet on that front. As far as the ECU goes... I heard of a product that works hand in hand with systems such as GReddy's Emanage that will basically provide the ECUs with certain values that it needs to see and will intercept others, letting the Emanage or similar unit insert proper values as you see fit within your tuning program, defeating the ECU's learning function, not sure on the validity of this, I'll look into it though.

Who said you can't use Engine Management with the tC 64-bit ECU? Then, how is it that many 64-bit ECUs are boosted in Scion Life. It just takes some more effort, but it can be done.

tC has a different motor 2AZ 2.4L, the timing and AFR will be way off, not to mention the harness

But they said, that you CAN'T use engine management without having a lot of troubles, which is false.
