Liftback from Canada?
I live in NY and like many others here, am having trouble ordering a Yaris to my specifications.
I was wondering if it would be possible to order a Yaris from Canada, which seems to have more availability, and then bring it back to the states. I'm not sure if this only complicates things, or if Canada has similar availability problems, but I thought it might be worth consideration. Does anyone have information about this? Thanks for any input! |

Wouldn't you have to pay a tax to bring it across?

Yea, probably. But if it's within reason, I'd be willing to pay it to cut down on the wait time, which at this point looks to be at least 6-8 months.

What are your specs? Something to think about... a lot of us are ordering our cars without some of the specs we may have wanted and putting them in aftermarket. I stumbled across a bone stock liftback in June and bought it on the spot... I wanted a different color and the power package but I am just putting power windows and door locks in aftermarket.

I would like the power package, but more specifically I want ABS, which I was told is only available with the power package. I thought I about adding all that stuff aftermarket but I assumed that to install ABS would be such a monumental job that it wouldn't be worth it.
Still, I haven't completely abandoned the idea. I just want to explore all the options first. If I can get everything direct, it would be a lot easier. |

If I am going to buy one from Canada.. I would take the advantage to get a 4dr. hatch.

you have to wait 6-8 months for a hatch down at new york? thats crazY! i placed an order for my 5 door hatch back in late feb or early march i forgot and my car came in late march and now i always see lots ot yaris parked outside dealer's yard but i live in the west coast of canada in vancouver so it might be different from east side cuz from what i know is that freight ships unload eveyrthing here at vancouver then they train by train to the east coast so i guess thats why it was faster but again 6 months thats ridicously long |

I don't miss ABS. Had it in my last car, don't have it in the Yaris.

I dont know what the rules are in the US for imports but I know here you cant import anything newer than 15 years old from overseas. I did look into importing a cadillac from the US late last year (about 8K difference in price) but there are huge rules, fees and taxes. Contact your government agency responsible for imports (usually a department of customs) ours is right in the phone book and they can tell you exactly what youll need and pay.
Youll also be paying a pile more for the Yaris here in Canada than you will in the US, like others on this forum you may just want to check other states for availabilty. |

I think ive looked at my odo' about three times.
You can buy a car here in canada, but you would have to jump through hoops at the dealer, you may have to permit it to get it back into the US (you prob wouldnt be able to register the car here). You will have to let customs know in advance of what your buying, where your buying it and when your planning to bring it back. Theres a website I had at one point for all the rules etc but I dont have it anymore, maybe search google. You will pay a pile more money for the car buying it here (even exchange isnt that great anymore), the car is probably worth a few thousand more than there, taxes, duties, registration, safety inspection?. I would just place an order and wait rather than spend thousands to have a car NOW. |

Thanks for all the great info. I'm probably going to end up ordering one from the US to avoid the headache. But I also sent an email to Toyota Canada asking for more specific information.
I'll let you know what comes up. |
