Yeah, I got a babe on the way and if I knew it at the time, I might not have bought the liftback. Luckily, I've found a few good carriages that fit in the back, with the rear bench up (Pre-Perego A3 and similar). Also, having the tight space behind the rear seats works in my favor, cause now the wife's car is the primary babe car which leaves my car free to haul cargo.Regarding sedan vs liftback. The ratio between 3drs and sedans is very close, but the 5drs blows them all aways. There about 3 5drs for every sedan on the road (based a personal observation in the GTA area). |

no particular reason, i had a dead sexy 3doors hatch before. i wanted a yaris, because of all the better features and better sound deadning.
i put on 45000km on my 3doors hatch in less than 2 years, and didn't want to put more money on it to make it more comfy. (RS seats, lowering suspension, sound system, powerdoor locks, keyless entry, spoiler, side skirts, 15" yaris TS alloy wheels-> thanks to echo_hrs<-, borla exhaust) i think i have enough of that car. all that money and yet, i still didn't have power side mirrors and power windows!! my previous car (suzuki swift 1.6L glx) had power everything! so, my final decision was parting it out, and selling the car. Buying another hatchback didn't do any justice, so i bought a sedan with areo package (aka S sedan full equip with fog lamps and alloy wheels) below, a picture of my 3doors echo hatch RS... as mentionned few lines up, this 3doors echo hatch had the seats of the RS, powerlock with keyless entry, spoiler of the RS and the 15" alloy wheels of a Yaris TS.. the missing RS side skirts weren't painted and installed yet when i sold the car.. i put too much money on it.. |

Sedan variant was not available when I purchased my Yaris back in Oct 2006, but its pending arrival had no factor in my decision. I'd pick the 5dr hatchback again if I was buying today.
Price b/w the 2 styles, comparably equipped, is about the same. Thus it comes down to utility and preference. As it already has been pointed out, the hatchback is more flexible in allowing tall & bulky cargo to be loaded. E.g. I've carried a large tube TV, and another time a treadmill, both boxed, straight from the store. This would not have been possible even in a 1 or 2 sized-up sedan. Even the carry out kids laughed The sedan does offer greater simultaneous passenger + cargo capacity, but I don't have a need for that. Thus, I prefer having the compact size of the HB, multitasking the rear seat area to carry extra passengers or cargo (piece of cake w/rear doors), as the need arises. Having rear doors makes alot more sense for me. If cirumstances change in the future and the sedan fits my usage much better, I'd have no aversion to switching to that. I'll go on record as saying that I actually like the look of the sedan Yaris. IMHO, it's but marginally less cool and funky than the HB. Easily the most modern and stylish of the current (small) array of subcompact sedans

When I was a teenager, NOBODY drove a 4dr sedan unless it was their parents car!!! and........2dr Coupes were better than 2 dr sedans!!! Then came 2dr hardtops (circa 1954-55) and they became the hot ticket.
Guess it stuck, because we still prefer the LB. A sedan is a sedan. Not having any kids also helps, although our daughter survived riding on the shelf behind the seats in our '74 Alfa Spider - grossly illegal today!

reading all of these posts really makes me miss my civic hatchback. i made the unnatural jump of going from a civic hatch to a sienna van, skipping sedans and station wagons altogether (amazing what having a child can do to ya..). with regards to the hatch vs sedan question, it shouldnt really matter since you're getting a great car no matter the choice. it really does boil down to personal preference in the looks category. we absolutely love hatchbacks. we hope to pass down this love to our kids, so when they've all reached driving age, we envision nothing but hatchbacks in our garage and driveway, with the exception of our sienna. i was very reluctant at first, but after having the driven the sienna for 3 months now, i absolutely love that vehicle as well (has every creature comfort we could ever need!). my wife now wants to implement some of our van's features into her ordered yaris liftback (nav system, heated seats, electrochromic mirror, etc). damn toyota for making such great vehicles...

no such thing as a sedan version here
![]() Although we do have the Vios, which you could consider a sedan equivalent of a Yaris here, same engine, same platform too I believe, but the interior is much different. It's a decent car, but the one thing that will always turn me away is that they used Britney Spears for the advertising when it first came out, and that will always and forever put a black mark on this car for me. No offense to Britney fans. And anyway yeah hatches are a lot sportier and versatile

I don't know why... maybe it is my "American-ness." I just don't think a hatch that small should have four doors.
Its... just... unnatural. Having said that, I am partial to the five door liftbacks. I would never own one (I am a single 21 year old male... two doors is plenty, don't want her to think I'm ready to use a third!) but I took Siphon mag into work today and all my boys I work with who have been teasing about my tiny ass car were taken aback by the five door s/c Blitz Yaris... but mostly about the fact that there is a 5 door version in existence. It does make the car a lot more practical. |

I like hatchbacks and think they're the best way to design a compact car. Never understood compact cars with a trunk, because a hatchback can generally give you more luggage flexibility without sacrificing passenger space when you're not lugging boxes (assuming both designs within the same vehicle length).
Over time, I've also grown to dislike the Yaris sedan... in the few times I've sat in the back, I've wondered why did the vehicle have a trunk? Because there could have been so much more space in the passenger compartment given its length... but that's just me... I'll only want a trunk in a large luxury sedan... |
