Oh so that's where that wet dog smell comes from. I'll have to take mine in.

HVAC ODOR: 2008 Models?

I have a 2008 Yaris Sedan and I'm experiencing the same HVAC odor. From looking at the TSB it does not appear that my 2008 Yaris is covered.

Has anyone had any experience with getting this issue fixed on a 2008/2009?

My wife brought it to Toyota today and they indicated they could not find any source of the smell (leaves mold etc) and they recommended that we turn the heat on occasionally to dry it out...?

I really hate how toyota made a car that could do this to us.

I tried lysol and it worked for 1 day.

I poked the hell out of the pipe that allows the water to drip out, and nothing, it works like it should. So I wonder where the mold is exactly, and how in the world to get to it.

Something tells me the dash or the bottom half has to be taken apart and the system removed? This car is becoming very annoying to own because of this alone.

What would be the process or approach to take to try and get this fixed under warranty even if it is not covered under the TSB?

Here is an update on my car. I'm now in Huntsville, AL and my car started smelling like mold after a month or two of being here. It actually smelled kind of like wet dog. I got a hold of the TSB from CTScott (I appreciate it), and took into the local dealer. They are going to replace the evaporator and the amplifier (what the heck is an AC amplifier) under warranty since I only have 32,000 miles on it. But it's going to take two days. They have to remove the entire dash and the center console. They want the two days just to make sure they don't have to hurry the job. They also have to order the part in. They are providing me with a free rental car - Toyota is being billed for it as warranty work. I hope this gets rid of the odor, and I will tell you how it works out.

How come none of you that had the work done haven't told us how it went? All I read is that how much the dash will be damaged. And by the way, I did the lysol thing over and over. It would last about a day or two, and then the smell would come back. I also checked the drain, holes under the body/floor and so on. This is the last resort to getting the smell eliminated.

I work with a guy here that has a 2007 HB with 46,000 miles, and he has no odor. The car smells just like brand new (as mine used to). But his model wasn't affected by the TSB.

The "AC amplifier" is the ECU for the AC.

See if they will hang onto the air box until you pick up the car, so you can see it (and snap some pics).

Well I have an odor in particular situations. If I turn the ventilation without the A/C button pressed, the odor is terrible. If the A/C button is pressed, then the odor disappears completely.. Very weird.. (I'm talking cold air)

Same situation here, and the smell in the morning when i hop in the car is just nasty, smells like feet cheese. AC blowing for a couple minutes usually kills it but its still disgusting. Im taking it in with the bulletin tomorrow.

I have the exact same situation with my '09... I am wondering if it's because when I bought it (30,000 miles) there was no cabin air filter installed. I installed one immediately... I wonder if there are any steps I can take to fix this myself because it looks like '09s are not covered by warranty.

I wonder why it would only smell bad with the regular cold air and not the A/C?

i wonder if humid climates are primarily the only places that this problem seems to appear... the first 7-8 months of ownership my car was in a very dry place... the past year I've been in a climate that changes from misty/rainy to very dry depending on the season.

I took it to the dealer today with the TSB. No problems, they are ordering the parts and will setup an appointment next week for the swap.
