I think you're right. I've got that musty stench in my 2010 now. I checked the A/C condensate drain, it's not clogged, and I know for certain those 2 rubber plugs were installed that they use for transit from the factory (they were in the glove box but I took the car back to have them installed the first week I got the car, so it's not that).

My problem started in August when we had 100+ degree heat index for days on end, and I'd drive home with the A/C on "recirculate" to keep it cool enough.

I don't have a cabin filter, I've never had one in any car I previously owned.

Now it smells like a 15 year old car when I first get in.

I think running on recirc never lets fresh air in. Its just the same old stuff in there. Sort of like not flushing the toilet! If youve got a bad case of it already, no, running on fresh air wont fix it. (but I think it would help!) For my wifes Camry I got a bottle of PureAir Auto Air Conditioner and Deodorizer. That fixed it muchmore better. But she STILL runs on recirc in the summer and never switches to fresh air so its nearly back where we started!

Well tried calling Toyota national service today as a last ditch effort, now bear in mind i have 38,000 miles on this car, only 2000 miles out and was told "we can do nothing for you" So i get to spend over $400 in parts and whatever it costs to recharge the system because these pricks don't want to back up their product. Next time I'm buying a nissan or a honda. Quality my ass.

That would cheese me off as well. I would suggest trying to track down the parts from a junkyard with a wrecked 09 or 10, rather than paying retail for them.

Anyone have access to the factory service manuals? Would really like to see the way the techs are supposed to do this repair before I start diving in....

The entire service manual is posted in the DIY section of the forum. The AC section shows the whole disassembly process.

Has anyone got this covered out of warranty? I thought it was normal until I found this thread. It should be a sticky as it applies to most owners out here.

The standard warranty is 36 months/36,000 miles. If your Yaris is still within that range it should still be covered. If it's beyond that have your local dealer run the VIN to see if an extended warranty was purchased.

So I just brought home my car after getting this done. Too bad I didn't find out about this sooner, I thought I'd just have to live with a smelly AC.

What should have taken maybe a day took them THREE days to give me my car back. First thing I notice when I get in my car and start driving is the steering is messed up. It is difficult to turn right or left, not smooth at all like before. Also my radio does not work at all. Tried all known stations and just get static.

Guess I will be calling them tomorrow and will probably have to go in again. Does anyone know why my steering could be screwed up all of a sudden?

Vinegar kills mold and alot of other "buggies"...try 50/50 solution w. water and pour a little bit (4oz) into the outside vent...it's worth a try.How often do folks that are having this problem inspect/replace their evaporator filter?.It is accessable through the lower passenger glove box---take box out---then pull out the filter!. Also,on a different post/thread a person was asking about a wire/mesh covering for their outside air vent to keep out foreign matter.....the 2010's come with them installed...look-up the part number and maybe it will work for your earlier models!!!!!.

I recently bought an 07 Yaris with 35,700 miles. Noticed this problem as soon as I got it but didn't think to look it up and see that there was the free in-warranty fix for it until tonight. I'm at 36,150 miles now. Damnit.

I just walked by this nice woman that had her temp plates from buying her brand new 2k10 sedan. I spoke with her for a few minutes and asked her if I could see whether or not the car had the filter installed. She looked a bit confused, but let me pull out her glovebox and low/behold, no filter as I suspected. I told her to take it back to her dealership and demand they install it for free. She was extremely grateful as her husband passed away a month ago and of course always took care of those types of things.

I have that horrible odor.
I have the extended warranty and my car is Toyota certified. Have to check to see if it is covered.

On a side note my 2000 Tacoma had this smell and it was sooo bad I would get a sick feeling when it would occurr.
Never took it in to get checked. I always thought it was because the truck sat up for months at a time because I didn't drive it much. I even tried pouring bleach in the cowl vent, but that never helped one bit.
