Another issue that allows low octane fuel to be used on a high compression engine is exhaust gas recirculation, used to control peak ignition temperature, which reduces NOX emissions.
The introduction of exhaust into the cylinder charge can be thought of as an inert dilutent, which allows far higher compression without pre ignition that would be possible on a non emission controlled engine. |

Well, its wednesday, and it appears that the gas stations have gotten back into their 'wednesday bump up' swing of things. must mean we'll be around 2.15-2.30 for the next while.
last night $2.13, this morning $2.29. i found a station for the low price, wasn't really necessary as i'd only driven 158 miles...boy that feels good to fill up for $10 bucks! if they go as scheduled, tomorrow it will be back to somewhere between 2.19 and 2.24. i'll update when it happens! (note, this is a half rant because i hate how it is so predictable, and yet no, prices aren't fixed!) edit: i decided to pick 2 weeks out to compare how much i was spending on gas (only had the yaris for 2 weeks, to be fair). between august 8-23 we spend $157.79 on gas for our Honda Element, and old Civic. between sept. 5-20, we've only spent $55.86! already put 1000 miles on the yaris too, which is on par with how much we were driving in august. $40 of that savings is probably the difference in price of gas, but i'm really happy to have a high MPG car again! we pay roughly US$0.70 per liter here, and that's considered pretty expensive! Our neighbors down south in Malaysia get gas a little cheaper (government subsidy), but then their car prices are a lot higher (except the crappy ones from the country's manufacturers of course) ;)
