How do you reset it on the dash?

The button next to it. Press it briefly to cycle through Trip A, Trip B and odometer. Press and hold the button, to reset Trip A or Trip B, whichever one is displayed at the time.

He has a MK1 (2003). Removing it required popping the trim around it loose with your fingers and then removing the mounting screws.
