Keep the shifts around 2,000rpm and try and limit yourself to 105km/h on the highway, if you do so you'll easily get sub 6L/100km. I drive anywhere from 120-135 on the highway and each week do some redline pulls and i'm still getting around 6.5L/100km and that is with a larger throttle body and ported intake manifold.
Take care of the car and it can easily be a 15-20 year car. Due to where you live it will be the salt that you have to worry about. I'd recommend getting it sprayed in the spring at a place like krown, it'll make your life easier if you ever want to do any work under the car. Btw, where abouts are you located in mississauga?

Congrats on a truly reliable Yaris. On any car they say after you cross 60 MPH you'll be burning 18% more fuel. I set the cruise control to 59 mph when I'm not in a hurry and get great gas mileage.

I wonder what opinions are as to what the slowest speed is at which point the highest mpg occurs. To my experience it doesn't get any better at 35 than at 60. I almost only drive the car short distances less than 10 miles start to finish and get 36 mpg in summer, 32 in winter.

I just drained my first tank so the numbers are likely to change, but the 2008 I bought last month is running at 39mpg or 6.0 L/100km. Combined city/highway. But then I drive 50mph tops and go real easy on acceleration. Probably about as good as it's going to get.
Pity. Only as good as my '98 Metro on a bad day (it runs 42-45mpg typically), and far below that of my '92 Metro convertible, which averages just over 50mpg. But I like the Yaris well enough. |

My 15 SE gets between 35-37 mpg and I rarely take it over 65 mpg. When I drive 75 it drops down to 32-33. I drive 60/40 highway.

I drive my car like it's a golf cart. I floor it all the time. I go as fast as I can as much as I can. no regards for rpm, shifting points, blah, blah, boring. I like to drive on the ice and snow!
all 3 last fill-ups came to exactly 30.06 mpg. the one before that was 27.6, but we had a big snow storm, so I was extra playful... |

Second tank: 39.75mpg (5.92 liters per 100km). Combined city/highway. Consistent with the 39mpg on the first tank.

I just went through my 2nd full tank on my new (used) 09 5 speed sedan. First full tank was a spirited drive using BG44k to clean out the system. Car has verifiable 17,000 original miles, saw very little use, old gasoline from last year probably in the tank etc. Anyhow, changed the oil, tire pressure at 38psi. That tank got 36.5 mpg. Filled it and took it easy aiming for peak efficiency. Drove 457.6 and kinda force-fed 10.518 gallons this morning for a tally of 43.5mpg. This is 100% suburban driving with few red lights, a few more stop signs and lots of moderate hills. I really took it easy going 42-52 miles per hour and shutting off at known long red lights. I could have shaved just a bit more corners here and there though. Last bar fast blink is supposed to be approximately 1.1 gallons in the tank, so when that happens, you know you burned very close to 10 gallons since we have 11.1 gallon tank. I was at 451 miles when that happened, so I thought I was going to be at 45.1mpg, but alas, the gas gauge is not perfect, or perhaps the gas station pump or both. Happy. Would love to see what I get on the highway.
