Looking/ Wanting to join the club. Which one to buy?
hello,
located in western canada i need to get a reliable, fuel efficient, small car. hoping to spend less then $5000 (potentially i could spend more, but not really interested to) hoping it will last 5+'ish years 95% city driving i have been surfing/ scanning though kijiji and autotrader for what is currently on offer cross referencing, reading, researching with google, trying to learn what i can sedan vs hatchback? auto vs manual? my height is always an issue as to which vehicle i can actually fit into and able to access the pedals. i do fit into a hatchback and still looking for a sedan to try out for size. either vehicle i suspect i will need to move the seat back. i have never owned an automatic, but im older now and feel lazier to shift. not sure if i can actually shift with the seats in stock position. i suspect the climate control dials on the sedan to be an obstruction. hmm, its turning into a longer post then desired.. what sort of mileage vehicles should i be looking at? gen 2 or gen 3? i appreciate all replies. automatic is good if you wanna just get in and drive. manual is good if you want to race/ mod. wont find a gen 3 for under 5 grand. or 5000. there like 13-18 grand in the US. your better off going with a 2 gen hatch or sedan, sedan being the lightest one biggest engine bay. |

I only have experience with the gen 2 manual hatch 3 door. It's been a great car so far with 160k miles on the clock.

They are all bulletproof vehicles. Pick whatever meets your financial and ergonomic needs.

mileage vs $$?
what sort of max mileage should i be looking at? averages: gen 2, less then 200,000km (124,000miles) cad$ 4-5000 (us$3-3700) gen 2, under 100,000km (62,000miles) they seem to be close to $7000 (us$5200) better to spend the extra and get the lower mileage? gen 3, less then 200,000km (124,000miles) start at cad$ 5000 (us$3700) and go up gen 3, under 150,000km (93,000miles) start at cad$6700 (us$5000) and go up |

I guess it depends on how long you want to own it. I'm driving an 04 RS from Canada that's knocking on 500k km. Needs some work but still does the 60+ miles per day I ask of it. It's hard to calculate the longevity difference between them, but generally better to get a newer vehicle as it has less exposure to road salt.

FWIW, I've had a 2012 and 2017 Yaris hatchback (3rd gen) at, at 6'4" tall (1.93m), there's been plenty of legroom and headroom. In fact, there's more headroom in my 2017 Yaris than a 2007 Corolla I once owned.

I personally like the 2nd gen. 2 door hatchback. I've never paid more than $3200 for one and at that price I got one with 114k on the clock. Albeit I buy my cars a lil on the rough side looks wise. nice large doors for ease of entry/exit, the manual trans clutch is pretty soft. Shouldn't have issues with effort on that front. Couple washers under the front seat bolts to lift the front of the chair up to support tall man thighs and you're set. I'm 6'1 and I fit just fine.
