I really like the idea of trying a hybrid subcompact/compact vehicle, but just can't stand the U.S. market hybrid offerings. On the Toyota front, the Prius line is just an abomination to look at, and the upcoming 2020 Corolla hybrid is an eyesore as well (IMO). Also not a fan of the bloated-looking 'unibrow' new Honda Insight 'fastback' sedan. The refreshed, facelifted 2020 KIA Niro that was unveiled recently at a European auto show looks pretty decent (for a quasi-crossover anyway), but I doubt that version will make it to the U.S. market intact, and I'm still not sure if I want to take a chance on the KIA brand as of yet.
The most likely scenario for me still is that I will track-down & pick-up a unicorn-rare low-mileage 2018 Yaris SE hatch (automatic) in a few years. I know that it will be trustworthy/dependable, I know what to expect from it, & it will be joyfully lacking in both a CVT and GDI and/or Turbo engine. The styling has even grown on me since its debut, just like it did for the 2015 version. I know that I am the minority around here, in that regard.

I actually really like that interior. I see lots of stuff that could break, but it's aesthetically pleasing.

Sat in that Benz recently, and can't express how much I disliked that interior... every bit of it!

When I sold cars many years ago, an old car dog once told me, "There's an ass for every seat." A little crass, but nevertheless it's something I've always remembered, and I think it applies to so many things in life; we each have our likes and dislikes.
Here's the dash that is still one of my favourites to this day: 1973 Datsun 240Z. |

I tested out the 6-Spd manual versions of the both the new 2019 Corolla XSE hatch & 2020 Corolla SE sedan (not available in manual for XSE sedan) this last week at some local dealerships, since I am considering sticking with my lifelong habit of buying/driving nothing but manual transmission vehicles on my next car in 2020 as well. Offputting/odd front fascia styling choices by Toyota aside (surprise, surprise), both cars have the comfort/feel/performance of great daily drivers to them (& you can turn off all the stupid sensor features for idiot/texting drivers) - and will most likely have bulletproof reliability in their manual transmission forms. The fact that Toyota mates both port & direct injection together in their Dynamic Force GDI engine design also bodes well for the vehicle, versus other automakers who are using (flawed) straight-GDI engine designs (pretty much the one thing that is stopping me from considering the Mazda2/Yaris XLE (SkyActiv engine) hatchback in 2020). If I do decide to stick to my manual transmission car buying habit then one of those two manual 2020 Corolla's is likely going to be my next car. I still really enjoy my current car though, so who knows when I will get around to changing up anything.
Top Choice currently if I stick to manual transmission vehicles - 2019/2020 Corolla XSE 6-spd Manual Hatch - Oxide Bronze Color (too bad no mid/dark gray color is available). Top Choice currently if I decide to buy my first automatic transmission vehicle - 2018 Yaris SE 4-spd Automatic Hatch - Whatever color that I could find in this hard-to-find model/trim.

The Toyota dealer here on Oahu has actually still has two new 2018 Yaris SE's. Everything moves way slower here than on the mainland. Kind of a hard sell since they are selling the 2020 Corolla for less. In 10 years... probably an electric hatchback of some kind. Preferably made by Toyota. We test drove a Chevy Bolt a few months ago but my wife hated the quality of the materials (cheap looking plastics, interior design, etc). |
