Poor gas mileage...
Hello all,
Recently I've noticed a large decrease in my MPG. I know it is winter time and I expected my MPGs to decrease slightly for things like warm up time and low tire pressue, but I think what I am experiencing is more than this. I reset my odo trip last time I filled up as a little experiment. Most of my driving is highway. For this tank of gas, I have gotten just under 230 miles. When my car alerted me that I have about 1 gal left in the tank. This is the worst gas mileage I have ever had while owning the car. Before the winter hit, I did a spark plug replacement as well as a coolant change. This was the last maintenance I did before experienceing the lower MPGs, I used NGK laser iridium spark plugs, checked the gaps of all, and made sure they were torqued down correctly. The last ones i took out were denso iridiums that had much larger gaps outside of the spec limits for the yaris with very worn tips, so i was expecting an increase in MPG. Also, I used toyota pink coolant. This weekend, I am doing an air filter clean (K&N) and a seafoam treatment on my next fill up to see if this helps. I have been checking tire pressure frequently and made sure to keep the tires around 32 psi. I still have another 1000 miles or so before the next oil change. I always change the filter and I use pennzoil platinum high mileage. I have checked the car's computer with a code reader and its not giving any codes for anything funky. Any other ideas? Thank you, 400 |

Well pulled the MAF sensor off, sensor was black. Sprayed it with MAF cleaner until it was clean. Also seafoamed a fresh tank of gas and cleaned the air filter. Just filled up and reset the odometer. I'll have an update in about a week.

A cooler running engine will use more fuel too, if you can scan it look for temps in the 175-200* range while going down the road.

Have you checked the live data with the scan tool? What does it say your short and long term fuel trims are?

It has 11070 on the connector. Trying to look it up on the wiring diagram.

looks like ambient air temp sensor plug, based on diagrams, this looks to have been ripped off of my car when it was in the front end accident prior to buying it. No maintenance light or anything from not having this plugged in?

Looks like your running a cold air kit, that doesn't help. Here's what I did to help maintain my mpgs. http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/sho...t=59283&page=2

Maybe I should just go back to the stock intake and get a drop in K&N for it... Ive been running the CAI for the past few years with no issues. I'm giving the car one tank of gas this week to see if MPG improves. If not, I will go back to stock intake set up at least for the winter. I'll keep this updated. I'm about half a tank of gas down with around 160 miles on my trip odometer so far for this tank, so there has been some improvement so far with the air filter clean, Seafoam and MAF clean but we will see by the end of the week.

averaging around 30 MPG now after a couple of tanks of gas and all of the cleaning. Not sure if I can do much better than that at the moment.
