Just bought a used 2007 Yaris and I am impressed with the MPG
First post on the site.
I just bought a used 2007 yaris sedan base with the Automatic tranny 1.5L. Got it for $5000 with 94k miles. I decided to do a highway mpg test yesterday and determined it was approximately 47 mpg on the highway. I was able to determine that by looking at the top bar, which went down when I finally reached 68 miles on the trip meter. Formula used: Sets: 68 miles (M) / 8 fuel bars (B) / 11.4 tank capacity (TC) 68(M) * 8(B) = 544 mi <--- average per tank 544 mi / 11(TC) = 47.71929824561404 Rounded to 47.7 MPG. Perhaps my math is flawed, idk. However, I believe it to be pretty accurate. This car gets much better gas mileage than my 2013 Hyundai Accent does anyway, so, that's already sufficient for me. I am going to let it get down to 1 bar to see approx how many miles it gets on a whole tank. Driving habits: Max speed is pretty much 65 mph. Almost all of the miles I drive are interstate or at hwy speeds. I live in the country and very little of the way home is below 60 mph speed limit. I also never slam on the brakes or brake hard. I always allow friction to slow me down and then use the brakes to ease into either a full stop or traffic slow down. |

Sorry to burst your bubble.
The bars on the gauge are not equal 8ths. The first bar can be approximately double that of the last bar. The only way to truly get accurate numbers is to - fill up to first click of the pump - record odo reading - do your driving - fill up again to first click - record your odo reading and amount of fuel pumped in - calculate distance travelled on fuel consumed

I have to agree with we Jari. The only way to accurately determine mileage is to divide miles traveled by gallons pumped at Fillup Time
But hey you got a great car there!

Good luck probably has to do with the irregular shape of the gas tank

I am not sure about mine, only a week or two now driving the 08 I have to pay closer attention and write stuff down. 1.5L sedan manual. Seems alright, just eyeballing it with fill ups and distance travelled, I must get 10km per cdn litre, if not 11 or 12.
How much gas is left after the last blinking bar? I am tempted to see, but I need a jerry can. An accurate way is to drain the gas tank and fill it up with 10 litres and drive until empty. Then theres the difference between the gas tanks, someone mentioned the irregular shapes, and probably different fuel pickup locations and slosh plates if such exist inside tank. I know I made the right decision with the sedan vs the hatches. Just hate theres no room for elbows on the center console. Another way to get an accurate measurement would be to bypass vehicle tank, install your own tank. Lots of work, more money. |
