Just got an Ecometer yesterday from Garm, and I have to say this is probably one of the best things I've bought for the Yaris, right up there with the Fujitsubo. I drove the car the way I normally do, and I'm getting about 36.6 mpg average. It's great to be able to have a tangible way of monitoring the effect your driving style has on mpg. Can't wait till the next tank, so I can experiment with different ways of driving. Greatest $70 so far.

The ecometer does not display or erase trouble codes. If you want that capability and extra engine info the SG II is the way to go. If you only need instant mpg, avg mpg and tach than the ecometer is a less expensive way to get there.

Code reading/erasing is awesome... I've already used it on 2 peoples cars.. the GF's and a co-workers... both cars are 00 or newer too

Yep a code reader is handy alright! I went with the ecometer though because I already had an Innova scan tool and all I really needed was the tach and instant mpg. Both units have their place depending on what you need and how much one wants to spend.

engine codes would complete the perfectness of the ecometer.

iv noticed that using neutral a lot compared to DFCO produces near perfect readings at the pump. DFCO seems to result in readings ~7% higher than actual. anyone else?

I used to use neutral to coast a lot a long time ago, one day I just switched over to never using neutral. I went from consistently getting 36MPG to 39MPG.

I believe your results per calcs - but it defies common sense considering total disengagement that is 'neutral.' Even with engine cut-off, you wouldn't expect these results. Will be getting ecometer soon and will let all know of change of habits and mpg upon monitoring.

I know it has probably been all spelled out but what exactly is involved in the install of this?

I have my Ecometer sittin on my dash to the left of the gauge cluster (double-sided tape), with the wire running across the dash under my TomTom mount, and down the a-pillar to the OBDII port. (I'll try to post a pic later today if I remember.)

Really, all you need to do is plug it into the OBDII, run your wire how you want it, and mount it where you want it. That's all.

DevilGirl,

So you bought the ecometer-how do you like it so far?

It's good. I use it for the tach and the MPG's. I'm still working on evening out my acceleration techniques (darn manual tranny ), but I think once I get that worked out, it will become even more useful than it is.

I also have the TomTom Go 740 Live which alerts me when I go above a set speed (72 for me), so I have that as a backup to help keep my speeding under control. Came in handy today. There was a cop sitting with a radar detector on the way home today.

Good glad it's working out. Most people seem to be very happy with them.

Simple plug and play. Just stick it where you think it looks best.

Hello all, I have recieved my eco meter today!

I just got back from testing it, and am afraid to say that im dissapointed in the product.

Maybe the thing needs some settings adjusted in order to work better:

I followed the instructions to get to the EEF i think it said, and it says to adjust it from 60-140 if its calculating too high. My eco meter was all over the place every second. going from 11 to 140 within one second. (mpg that is)

So i set the EEF at 61.

What is everyone elses set at?

My other problem is: Whenever i have my foot on accel pedal the MPG seems fine. whenever i take it off it quickly zooms to 100+ and when i put my foot back on it takes my mpg up to 55-65. This seems very off.

Also when I come to a complete stop the eco meter goes to 0 and stays there. This is wrong too from what I have been reading.

What am i supposed to be setting this thing at?

Is there something I am doing wrong?

Yep it really is just a plug and play. Plug into the obd II port, route the wire out of the way and mount in an easy to see location. The A pillar, steering column (just mount far enough forward to allow clearance for driver side glove box to open) and near the center gauge cluster seem to be popular choices. The enclosed 3M temporary industrial fastener works quite well, as does 3m double sided trim tape available at auto parts stores. There is no permanent alteration to the vehicle required.

The ecometer calculates mpg anytime the engine is running, including while idling. You can watch your avg mpg drop as you idle. It is very accurate-mine has always been within .7 mpg or so of calculating by the "pump method" at fill up.

This is a long thread, but there are quite a few good points and mounting ideas mentioned here if you can work through it. Most everyone seems to be very satisfied with their ecometer.

Hope this helps!
