I thought about an aftermarket steering wheel, but I can't get over the fact that if the CHP catches you, you're fined like $5k-$6k (not for the steering wheel, but for tampering with the airbag), or at least my friends told me.

I don't know how much the tickets are, but yeah, if you remove any safety equipment from a vehicle, you can get a ticket.

My co-worker actually got a ticket for using his 4-point harness in his 350z instead of his seatbelt. He still had it present in the vehicle, but he got ticketed for not wearing it.

Stupid question maybe... but why would anyone want to remove their steering wheel over and over again? Theft deterant? That's a big key chain to lug around.

for theft deterrence, for allowing easy access to the dashboard(above and under) during repairs and most of the times just purely for aesthetic reason!

Style up all you want, it's your choice; but in a small car like the Yaris I would prefer to keep the airbags in place!

Are there any other aftermarket wheels which will fit and still retain airbag function? I guess going aftermarket will fix the steering wheel distance problem

your only choice are
1. a toyota leather steering wheel from another toyota/sicon
2. a TRD racing steering with airbag

I may be mistaken but I saw some of these are a shop for about $400... and I don't think they were replicas, maybe second hand.. I can look into it if you want?

Cheers
