base versa hatch is 10 grand or so, well under the base yaris...
on a side note, 2010 has vehicle stability control? neato, but what market are they appealing to here? no wonder the base yaris is almost 12.5k, it has a ton of features (tpms, vsc, abs) all standardized and included in the price, now they just lost the lower end of the market (where kia, hyundai, chevy, and nissan might pick up with their 10-11 grand cars). unless the iQ comes out soon, I don't understand why they would exclude a whole market range like that?

^ That's why I didnt buy a new one, because for a very basic one I am paying around $14k at dealers price! Its ridiculous!

($12,7k for base (I believe) plus .7K for destination charges plus dealer charges)

But it created a huge car buying shift in the market. We'll pay whatever gas costs because we HAVE to travel. What changes is the types of cars we choose to drive. In the summer of '08, millions of people dumped their large vehicles for small cars. We may cut back leisure travel, but we'll still go to where we need to go even if gas was $6 a gallon.

I got a fully loaded 2009 Yaris LB for 13.1k back in February and even got a quote for a Yaris LB w/ Convenience Package for 12.6K.

Before I test drove the Yaris and purchase one new, I had honestly thought I was going to buy a 10K Nissan Versa 1.6 . I decided on Yaris because it handled better, had better fuel economy and A/C was standard. If I wanted to get A/C in Versa it was near 1K option, that would bring the 10k Versa to an 11K car. My budget allowed me to spend more on a car, so I decided to go with a Yaris for a few thousand more (Honda Fit was over my budget). If my budget was 11k or less I'd go with the Nissan Versa over a Hyundai Accent.

I'd never buy a car without AC. Driving in a hot car is unacceptable and driving with the windows down on the highway is the worst.

Agree. Its a massive improvement over the last gen accents.

There's nothing wrong w/ the new accent hatchback. (well, except for the cheap old looking single DIN stereo unit... thats horrible IMO)

And im actually a little jealous that it has more hatch space than our yarises! :(

I've driven cars without A/C all my life and it's only hard once in a while, when the temperature exceeds 100 F but otherwise, I do without, no problem.

I have AC in the Yaris now but I hardly ever use it. The Yaris AC isn't very good anyway, and it sucks up MPG.

I am surprised the Kia Soul did so poorly considering the money spent advertising it. The even uglier Nissan Cube did even worse. What is most troubling (as a Toyota Shareholder) is how poorly the Scion line is doing. I would have hoped a Scion would have been in the range with Kia Soul and Nissan Cube. Toyota screwed up the XB when they changed it and the XD is pretty mainstream. I am glad the Government Motors cars did so poorly
.

Toyota is hurting in general. Yes the whole industry is down but Toyota and its divisions are really hurting. 30% overall down in sales. I don't know if that's global or U.S. but still that's a lot.

Also Scion with its second gen cars bombed. Scion got off its core philosophy of cheap, fun, youth oriented, NOT-Toyota. Sales for Scion are down over 50%!!!!! That's very alarming!! Toyota started to follow the original Scion owners. Yes don't totally keep them out but don't cater to everyone which Toyota has a problem with. Scion got too mainstream. I know the cars are based of existing Toyota cars JDM or EDM or whatever. Fine. But don't dumb them down to Toyota like cheapness of USDM cars. Also don't make them detached, isolated floaty, bloated Toyota cars with a Scion badge. Don't be GM Toyota.

I want Scion to succeed, they started good but...Toyota has that mainstream, lots of sales filter on, appliance, doesn't work for everything as they are seeing.

Rant over.

Well said about Scion, sir. I agree. I'd love to see them succeed, too. Not that I have any say, but this is how I'd do it:

- iQ
- JDM bB
- Something to replace tC
- ???

Also dump the "pure pricing."
