I dont think the US ever got the hatch. Could be mistaken.

I'm late to the game, but fairly car savvy, I'm pretty sure you are right....the Echo never made it to the U.S. as a hatch.

The problem is content. If we had the 5-door with the same content as the Scion lineup, you would see a lot more being sold. A majority of the xA and xB drivers around here are far from the target market. You just get more for the money in a Scion, and all those baby boomers understand it. The new xD is essentially a Yaris interior with an Americanized body, wrapped around a Corolla engine, but I'd personally rather have the 1.5L 5-door RS that our Canuck friends are offered. I just don't get Toyota on this one....wanting to sell inexpensive, and only offering lacking. Sounds very familiar to the Echo story.

Hmm, when I went to the largest Toyota dealer in SoCal 3 weeks ago, they told me that the Yaris is Toyota's #1 selling car. They had allot of them in stock, but they had allot of every car. They have a 5 story parking lot full of new Toyota's. Not sure if he was telling the truth, but I have read the same info in the LA Times.

The Yaris is far from Toyota's top seller. But they did sell 7,600 of them in March. In comparison, Nissan sold 6,500 Versas and Honda sold 4,200 Fits.
The reviews aren't nearly as negative as they were for the Echo. I don't see the Yaris meeting the same fate. |

The world does not stop at the borders of the United States, nor is the U.S. the only car market. The Yaris is indeed Toyota's top seller overall and specifically in every market except the U.S. and Australia.
When I called my local dealership for something last week the hold music was punctuated only by advertisements for the Tundra and FJ Cruiser, without a single mention of the Prius, Yaris, TCH, etc. That right there tells you where the American mindset is.

Consumer Reports (which I do not like) rated the Yaris as one of the most dissapointing cars of 2007 (they had a list of the top 10 and bottom ten). I don't get it. I am glad to see it selling well. It sort of thumbs its nose at the naysayers.

Excellent point.
Do you have any numbers? All I can find is that the Yaris sold 220,000 in Europe last year and their goal this year is 270,000. |

Ironic about CR huh? They loved the ECHO but don't think the Yaris is that great, well there are strong points but they don't reconmend it. So in turn they recomend a car America doesn't like but don't with a car America seems to be warming up to. I'm so happy the Yaris is doing well, I was nervous at first when Toyota announced the Yaris but I was so excited as well especially for the hatch ![]() . I'm starting to see some Yarii on the road obviously mostly sedan but some hatches. Yaris is certainly in my top list for next possible. The hatch that is.
