Hell no.
The good 'ol USA is an automatic driving country. Even the few of us that still do drive manuals don't know how to do it properly. Just check the forums for awhile. I've seen people advocate not engine breaking -- and a lot of people I've seen drive manuals don't do this. Automatics, at least, down shift for you. But coasting in neutral with the clutch engaged is hard on the transmission and breaks -- and poor practice -- besides dangerous. Breaks can overheat and fail doing things like that. Manual driving is a bit of a lost art in the USA -- with the exemption of truckers I suppose.

I say automatics. Mine were. However by the time I was in driver's ed I had already learned to drive a stick. My sister can...poorly. My brother cant at all (but he isnt a great driver period) I am the only one that made it a point to learn and learn fast.

My driving school was on auto been driving auto ever since then. First time ever to drive a manual was when I bought this car and I don't think I will ever switch back. I love it. I just jumped in the car and knew how to drive it. I did kill it for about a week at red lights but after that I was golden. :) I LOVE MY YARIS HAHA

I've got an auto in my boat-puller SUV, but I much prefer a manual for my daily driver. Granted, I'm not in a city, and a few miles of downshifting into the curves and down the hills on the way to work is much more fun than a city commute with a clutch. Depends a lot on one's environment, for sure.

I got the slushbox (auto) for my wife. I've tried several times with a few cars to teach her standard but it's a lost cause. I prefer standard and will buy one whenever I get a chance. I learned to drive stick on this:

Different trannys for different uses, auto for mud bogging trucks, manual for tow rigs, auto for drag racing consistency, manual for autocross/roundy-round racing.
Old farts like me think people should know how to use both, no matter which you prefer, people in Kansas should know how to swim, just in case. |

auto. why choose to drive with two hands and two feet when you can get it done with one hand and foot? this way i have a hand free to roll down a window (yes, i have manual windows! don't laugh!), talk on my cell, or just to scratch an itch!

Its a good thing to have both automatic, and manual. Thank god I have two cars
I hate driving manual in to much traffic especially on my work days and college. I usually drive my Camry(auto). For weekends when I want to get out the house its the yaris 5 speed.

Mine is manual--had to go to "big city" to get as local dealer had only A/T on lot.
Dealers around here do NOT do the special order thing-- I had to go to Atlanta for previous car... |

I made the decision for an Auto because of city traffic. I love manuals in sports cars, but a stick in a Yaris would just get downright annoying after a while. My Lotus Elise, on the otherhand, will be a stick guaranteed! hehe I've heard people complaining about the feel fo the Yaris stick being slow in gear changes or something... My auto is as smooth and a babys bottom! Sounds like a little auto envy going on around here...
