Price wise I found some on ebay around the AU$180 mark (about 150US??). There is an instruction sheet provided and it looks quite DIYable..

Some of the benefits running EWP are:
- increased fuel economy (one less sob sapping the engine power)
- more power to the wheels (they claim 10kw (~13hp) on a V8 Holden)
- desired coolant temp can be preset (with the optional digital controller)
- can be set to run even after the engine is off (on track days)

This is VERY interesting to me. Tamago, got any thoughts?

BTW - to answer the original question, i think the 3-best performance mods, based on bang-for-buck and within the range of the average budget are: lightened/underdrive pulley, axle-back exhaust and air intake swap, in that order.

better tires, an aggressive alignment, and rear swaybar. skip the power mods, unless you're doing forced induction or nitrous, it's a waste of money /hp

Ooh, yes, I forgot the sway bar (rear). Such a good investment.

The best thing ive ever bought for the yaris is a AFE cold air intake..it made an amazing difference in mine as well as using 91 octane gas and putting fuel system cleaners in it on a regular basis..it does give it a slight growl..but a satisfying one...you can do it yourself..its very simple..and cost about 150.00..totally worth it.... alot of bang for your buck

Weight reduction is the cheapest. It also depends on your budget. Check out the classifieds, I purchased a used AEM intake and lowering springs, saving about $400 (the price of the springs alone if I had bought them new.) Forced induction/nitrous would be the way to go if you have the money. I went with intake, header, exhaust, pulleys and it shaved just under 2sec off my quarter mile time WITH removing the seats, spare & tools.

correct me if im wrong, but i dont think it really matters with stock 1nz engine if you put 87 or 91 octane in your tank. a stock 1nz has low compression anyways and has no real gain in power other than burns cleaner. i know as a crx owner for a decade that the stock 1.6L sohc wont produce any hp from 91 octate to 87. i personally think its more frame of mind that u put something that someone else uses thats tuned for it so u think the cars is quicker, but its really not..
i know this goes true with crx, but i could be wrong with the yaris, if im wrong i will convert to 91 octate today

one correction. 10.5:1 is fairly high compression, not low. I'm guessing CRX compression is even higher?

Hey, was reading the thread since beginning, not sure what a underdrive pulley does. Looking for something that will lower RPM at constant speed...

An underdrive pulley does exactly the opposite. The engine revs are a lot more now that I have it on.
You may want to look into throttle controllers instead, since you can basically control the throttle response any way you want, and thus have better control of RPMs at constant speeds.

re: #44 and #45:

rpm vs speed is a function of the transmission ratio and tire diameter.

It has nothing to do with the crank pulley, or a throttle controller, or anything else.
