^ My cabin noise is amplified by several things: 3" turbo-back exhaust, TRD motor mounts, gutted rear panels, no baack seat, etc. So 4000 rpm is LOUD in my car, might not be so much in a stock car.

Winding it up produces more noise in general.

On the street, yes it's great. Drag racing, probably not.

I'll try it out both ways on Thursday. Looks like we have a few people coming out.

I can't recall what the RPM is at 70 with a stock final drive?

Changing the 5th gear ratio from 0.815 to 0.725 puts the 70 mph RPM right around 3160. Not great, but closer to stock. The 5th gear is out of a C59 from an 03-ish Matrix/Vibe/Corolla. That particular C59 also has a 3.941 final drive, which is a little bit more aggressive without going whole hog. The thing that sucks about the C59 is that they normally run about $1.2k rebuilt, $600 broken.

Ok, made some progress on my gear swap project. A C56 can indeed be torn down without the Toyota SST kit.

Important tools to have (or at least what I used):

* Bolt puller set
* Bearing separator set
* 3/8" drive breaker bar
* deadblow hammer

Replacing the bearings will require a few other automotive tools, but I haven't messed with that yet. Putting it back together is a very different story and will require access to a hydraulic press and either a very precise torque wrench (0-15 in-lb) or knowledge of the mechanics/physics/calculus to make a widget that will verify the pre-load torque on the differential.

I think Art used a 2-ton press. About $150 from Harbor Freight.

The guy I helped change the gears(he busted one on an xB) just got a press from Harbor Freight like Garm said.It was not easy,but it was cold and rainy and I had never taken apart a tranny before like this so I was just the helper.No need for special tools short of bearing separator and bolt outs,other than that is basic tools

I'm drooling a little bit, and putting off some homework.

4.0 = the early < '03 C59 3.941:1? If so, that's from a 1st gen Matrix (I think).

4.5:1 = ??

There's also a TRD 4.733:1 from the Starlet/Truino that may or may not fit.

So, did you try this out on a dragstrip? What was your E.T? How much did you trim off of your previous best time?
