And the actual retail price (err weight) is 524 lbs.

edmscan was the closest (guessing 520 lbs).

I was pretty amazed as to how light the Yaris shell is. When you look at the curb weight of this car (2290 lbs MT / 2335 lbs AT) it is pretty amazing that the shell is less than 1/4 of that weight.

I will be posting another thread with detailed pictures of the cut sections to show the details of the construction.

Ironically at $0.06 per lb for scrap steel, it cost me more for sawsall blades and angle grinder cutting discs than I will make off the scrap steel. But, it was all worth it to have the opportunity to see how these cars are assembled.

Wow that is surprisingly light! This was an awesome thread.

Edit: Just looked up the weight of my '91 Miata shell for fun, 466 lbs.

That is amazing! Makes me want to strip one down to the bare essentials and build an ultra light weight racer out of it, already know a bunch of stuff that could go away!!

My car sits at 1850lbs with an 8-point cage in it. I think you could have a "streetable" car without the cage around 2000lbs.

Our cars are so light, they won't even bust a water/soda plastic bottle that's capped on the road. I've tried driving over them when people leave them in the road. My car drives right over.
