Less long-term reliability, and arguably the ugliest front design ever to grace an automobile. Perhaps Toyota will solve the ugly part by the time it becomes the Yaris in the USA.

The Mazda 2 is not very attractive in my humble opinion. It has a super long snout that seems out of proportion. The interior is pretty nice though. And I do trust Mazda. Not as much as Toyota however. My 91 Ford Festiva was a Mazda 121(Japan) and assembled in S Korea by Kia. Hell Kia was even selling the Mazda made car under a Kia name. Those Festiva's were tough little shits. Many on the road have 300k miles on them. Hell you still see them on the road today. A lot tougher than the Metro's of the day.

Some Toyotas aren't as stellar as others, no? I admit the Yaris is dependable, but its time.

Just goes to show you the taste of the buying public. That front end is HIDEOUS but hey....thats what sells. You gotta be different. You gotta have pizzaz.
Yeah right. No thanks for me I would buy the exact same ECHO as my 2001....or the exact same Yaris as my 2009 every ten or fifteen years. Unless they came out with something REALLY different like a one liter engine or a car that weighed 1500 pounds. But not at the expense of reliability!

Of all the cars I have traded away. I would like an 05' to end of model line Mercury Grand Marquis. Best V-8 highway cruiser I ever owned. Possibly my bone stock 1971 Ford F100 with radio. First rebuild ever. None of the newer stuff inspires me to one degree more than the other and I'm rather satisfied with the rest of our fleet.

If my Yaris blew up tomorrow, these are what I'd consider, in no particular order, all with manual transmissions:
Used Fiat 500 Abarth Used Mazda2 Touring Used Scion xD Used Nissan Cube S Used Suzuki Vitara/Chevrolet Tracker (2.0 L) Used 2010+ Yaris five door Used Chevy Sonic 1.4t (possibly; would have to have low miles) New Chevy Spark 2LT New Mitsubishi Mirage (I'd at go drive a manual, but it's unlikely) New Yaris SE if I could figure out how to get a 5MT Possibly, just possibly, a Scion iQ despite its CVT.

If I am barred from buying a Yaris and must purchase a competitor:
Honda Fit. Chassis code GE8. Made in Japan. |

If I wasn't limited to the North American market, i would also consider a "boy racer" Clio 200 EDC.

Maybe a new Tacoma. Hate wasting gas though, but it'd be great for winters around here which are notoriously difficult.
