From what I've been reading though. People are averaging their mpg's driving between 55-60mph. While I tend to keep mine between 60-70mph. It's kinda hard not to go faster when you drive in LA highways, where everyone is basically speeding. even the people that aren't trying to speed are going over the limit.

my best was 44.2 for a FULL tank... 95% highway at 58mph, coasting in neutral whenever i could.

If I reseted the miles to 0.0 at fill up before the travel and a full gas tank then at the end of the trip it only used 2.7 gallons then the basic calculations to get the avg mpg is true then. I dont drive hard so thats why

Well today I tried to keep the yaris below 60 on my daily commute and I got it to go 65miles before the first bar went away. Before on my normal driving it would go away after 50-52miles everytime. I guess it really just depends on the rpm this car is driven at. Maybe it's time to get a rpm tach.

Nah. One of the most major things your car has to overcome at 60mph is wind resistance. Wind resistance is simply what your hand feels when you stick it out of the window. Wind resistance increases EXPONENTIALLY with SPEED. Another resistance that increases with speed is rolling resistance, but that aint no biggie on hard road and properly inflated tires, but it does exist and does increase with SPEED. You have the correct gage - the SPEEDometer. Tach's are good to have though, but not for this reason.

my first gas guage bar typically drops between 70 and 80; 1 or 2 tanks dropped earlier, 1 or 2 dropped later. i just drove from minneapolis to toronto and back again. i had about 1900 miles before the trip and 4200 after. averaged probably 60-65mph and 300 miles of all city driving while in toronto. bumped my lifetime average from 36.5 to 38.02mpg. i had 4 tanks over 40mpg on the trip, very happy about that! the last one was over 43! i didn't think it was legit, but the current tank is dropping at regular intervals, so i guess it was. i'm very impressed. got an oil change last night, switched over to mobil 1 so we'll see if there is any improvement from that too.

A scangauge has a tach in it as well as instant MPG feedback.

bike races this weekend: i had to drive up to New Gloucester, Maine both saturday & sunday. a little more than 2 hours each way...

anyways. i just wanted to get there, race & come home, as quick as possible.
so instead of driving at 58mph & coasting... i kept it around 70mph (pizza & beer were waiting for me).

end result: 38mpg average.
not great.. but not as bad as i though it would be.

keep in mind that i also had my girlfriend, a ton of gear, and my bike & xtra wheels on the rack on the back...

33.1 MPG = Pumped my tires up to 42PSI. 3300 miles so far.

I've been noticing that if I cruise at 65 to 70 miles an hour on the highway in 5th gear I'm getting 50 to 60+ miles to the gallon. Thats using my scangaugeII device to be able to check on gas usage. Its the picking up speed that uses the most gas. But while cruising you can get rediculously good gas milage.

Very very true. When cruising forward at a constant speed, the car only consumes gas to overcome friction, including wind resistance. However, when the car tries to pick up speed or change direction, it has to consume more gas to overcome inertia in addition to friction.

Thanks, not as good as many here, but im not hating them.

the last tank was so good, bc I had to drive like 600 kms to North Bay and back, with like NO city driving and had no weight at all in my car but for me.

(though I was still surprised at the 43 mpg, bc i was driving 130, 140 the whole way there at back... so i wasnt exactly driving at an fuel economical speed)


I usually drive to TO a lot, so that = 400 ish kms of high driving, but when when i make these trips it always for the weekend, im weighted down w/ a cooler full of ice and a two-four of beer, my bags for of clothes and shit. So that's heavy and extra weight,

plus once im IN Toronto, i always end up driving places Downtown, so there's a good mileage killer

I figure thats why Ive only been in the high 30s basically

haven't gone thorugh my first full tank of gas yet, but I'm down to 2 bars left on the meter and about 290km on this tank, should be able to reach 350... Most of my driving is pretty short trips and not much highway, so it's not that great...
