After reading all the posts I find the brick-through-window-tactic would probably work the best

bought the car from a private owner - who had an aftermarket alarm system installed.(the car was base model - no power locks/windows)

so he got all four doors installed with power lock motors, and the alarm automatically locks all doors in 3 seconds once the car starts. it's very easy to forget if you need to do some stuff before you sit in the car, or warm it up.

or like today....it was snowing in nyc, i had to scrape the windows, etc etc, while warming up the car(along with blasting heat).

but i have my spare key in my wallet now, and one in my apartment.

I think it would have been cheaper to just wait till the next day and had your local dealership make you a key from the VIN #

Letting it run out of gas would have still been cheaper.

Also, the pics look like it is during the day. Someone probably could have run him to the dealership.

friends were either at work, or not within a 60 mile vicinity. could have called a cab for 40 bucks(oneway) to the dealer - would have been worth it compared to the damage.

that's true, the car is under warranty, so replacing the engine after 12-24 hours of running would be free anyway.

Letting it run for that long and out of gas is not going to kill your engine.

It's a Toyota, give it a little more credit than that.
