OK, the EVO is out in the hands of the geek press and beta testers

They were giving them away today at the Google IO developer's conference in San Francisco, and each attendee walked out of there with one. Man

So initial impressions (I held one in my hands briefly)

1) its NOT too big. It's just right.

2)

Unboxing vid. here

http://www.phonedog.com/2010/05/20/h...rint-unboxing/

and many more to come, I'm sure. Man this is an exciting device
Those of you who are w/ Sprint are gonna be happy campers.

ha!!! I knew it!!! I knew N1 would be first online for that one ;)

Here is a first look at Froyo running on Google's Nexus 1

(video is half way down the page, 7 minutes)

http://www.phonedog.com/2010/05/23/g...ate-available/

Beta tester says 2.2 makes EVO look sluggish by comparison b/c 2.2 considerably faster than 2.1 ... hmm...

"Froyo" is the updated operating system on your android smart phone.

Right now, the most recent Android smart phones (Nexus 1, Droid Incredible, Motorola Droid, EVO, etc.) are running on "eclair" Version 2.1, I believe. Google just released 2.2 (Froyo) but it's only out on just a few Google phones so far.

Every time G releases a new update, they call it the name of a pastry (there was donut, cupcake, eclair and now froyo) and they put a giant replica of it next to the Android sculpture on the Google campus

Check this out, the new "froyo" sculpture is out.

http://www.androidcentral.com/froyo-...googles-campus

these sculptures are enormous. The Android dude is probably somewhere between 12 and 15 feet high.

I'm guessing not initially because it has Sense UI already on it, but HTC has made some kind of a promise earlier this year and said that all the devices they released in 2010 should be able to get it (yes, including the mytouch slide Shroomster's wife is gonna want in about a week ). They didn't say when, though.

(Sense UI is a user interface that sits on top of the android operating system.)

What is likely gonna happen is that your EVO will come out with 2.1 out of the box and in a couple of months (?), you'll be getting an OTA (over the air) update.

http://gizmodo.com/5543847/htc-says-...kely-get-froyo

EVO is the hottest Android phone right now, followed closely by the Incredible Droid on VZW so I doubt HTC will drop the ball on that one.

cant wait till the moto droid gets the 2.2 update so much good things they said its going to be 2x-5x faster or something like that, you will be able to save apps on your memory card now, no longer on the 256mb stock phone storage, your phone becomes a mobile hot spot so all you do is activate it and connect your laptop or whatever to it wireless for internet service, and so much more, its so sick can't wait :)

what i can't really wait for is the Moto Droid 2.0 thats coming out in 2011 lol when im due for an upgrade woop woop

I bet there is an app for that ;)

Seriously, you might be able to plug in a camera and go from there?

these mini laptops / notebooks / tablets are pretty cool. Laptops are a pain to carry around, especially when you add the adapter, etc. It gets quite heavy.

yup i got a asus EEE netbook, nd its so nice 150gb hard drive, upgradebale 2 gig rams, atom processor, graphics card, etc. Only about 2lbs and i have fairly large hands so its the size of my hand almost, probably a little larger, if i spread my hand out. very light and very portable take it almost everywhere with me and the charger is small too, about half the size of a regular laptop charger.

OK, so I was at Radio Shack today picking up an adaptor for my SD card, and I spoke to the guy at the counter about the EVO.

Apparently today is the last day to pre-order at Radio Shack and be guaranteed to receive the EVO on its scheduled roll-out date.

You need $50 down to pre-order. You need to qualify for an upgrade or be ready to sign a new 2 year contract with Sprint.

Plans start at $69.99 and up to $99.00 + $10 mandatory fee for "heavy data usage" (tethering extra)

In San Francisco, 4G networks are supposed to roll-out in September of 2010.

If you are a AAA member (that's new), or a credit union member, you qualify for a 10% discount on the monthly plan (but that's before they add on the $10 and the tax).

(@ Kioshi, I'm pretty sure there is a 30 day guarantee / full refund, so check it out, looks like you can't go wrong.) You have 30 days in California to cancel the contract and return the phone, 14 days in other states. (Yup, we're special in California)

I forgot. Radio Shack, like Best Buy, will handle the rebate part for you, so all you pay is your $200 and you're out the door. If you go to Sprint directly, you have to do the rebate thingy.
