mud guards vs. fuel economy
Does mud guards/flaps hurt fuel economy? I mean I got my Yaris for the fuel savings and don't want to put on mudflaps if it's gonna lower my mpg (even by 1-2 mpgs)

Yaris Mud Flaps
I do know from my friend that's a Toyota mechanic that the Prius will suffer a mile or two a gallon hit in fuel economy if a customers car looses a mud flap. I'm guessing that since the two cars are very similar and aerodynamic that OEM mud flaps wouldn't do anything except help MPG.
I've been wanting to get some so that I could test this theory out. |

I would have to say no, due to the fact that they are behind the wheel. Any "scoop" effect they would have is probably negated since it is behind the wheel and the air disturbance of the wheel just flows around it.

A number of articles here:
http://ecomodder.com/ Depends on the design but generally the consensus is that they take away a little mpg. |

Mudguards came today from Sparks Toyota!!
Quote:
Looks like the rear wheels have to come off! have to drill two holes for each rear mudguard! the fronts seem to help a little! waiting for warmer weather to do the rears.

I have still the same MPG also with mud flaps but maybe in summer it will go down since cold weather ( below zero) hurt MPG a lot :(

Update...Got the mudflaps installed for free by the dealer ~10k miles and ~2 months ago and I haven't seen a difference, consistently 34-38 mpg (depending on load and temperature) and I'm not babying it either.

Nice they did it for free. My dealer wanted to charge me $150 to do it. I said no, and did it myself in 15 minutes in the garage.
