VVT Oil Control Valve Filter Replacement (the other oil filter)

I spent an hour plus, yesterday replacing the VVT OCV oil filter on my kid's 2008 Yaris. I figured that I would write a post and save everyone a lot of trial and error.

Here is what you will need:
- 8 mm ball end hex key. https://www.harborfreight.com/hand-t...set-61966.html
- Filter, Toyota P/N 15678-21010, reference number 15678A on the diagram below. https://parts.toyota.com/p/Toyota_20...567821010.html
- 12" piece of 3/16" ID copper tubing.
- Rag for catching oil.

The process:
1. This filter is located in the cylinder head, under a cap, which is behind the alternator.
2. Stuff a small rag under the filter plug behind the alternator.
3. Insert the 8 mm allen key into the filter plug by going over the top of the alternator from the front of the engine bay. Remove the plug and washer.
4. The filter is recessed about 1" behind the plug. Insert the copper tubing into the filter recess and press the prongs on the end of the filter into the hole in the tubing. This will allow you to remove the old filter. (Figuring this out took .75 of the hour.).
5. Insert the new filter.
6. Replace the plug and washer and tighten. (Sorry, no torque spec.)
7. Remover the rag.
8. Check for leaks.

Cheers.

Not sure what you are asking WRT the drawing part number?
Filter was pretty clean (a couple of flecks) after 102K miles.

Do you feel it needed replacement at 100k? Could it have gone to 200k miles on original?

Remove, clean with carb cleaner, replace would work......if I didn't break it getting it out (use the copper tube method).

Good post, thanks for this.
I was surprised when I screwed out my filter, it was absolutely clean, at least it looked like that (143000 miles). I gave it a proper wash in brake cleaner anyway and screwed it back.
