January '11 Yaris Sales: Down

So the first month of 2011's subcompact sales are in the books.

The Yaris, however, was down 50% from this time last year. My guess is that 2011 Yaris sales are going to be slow until the next generation debuts.

Think we will see future sales increase due to the major increase in gas prices.

Interesting that the Fiesta sold 4270, while the Mazda 2 (essentially the same car) sold 479...

My local Toyota dealerships don't seem to be stocking up on Yaris anymore since they haven't got anything new since late November, but they've been getting new shipments of Corolla's every couple of weeks.

A spec-ed out automatic 5-door Yaris comes to over $17,000. If I'm looking in that price range, I'm sure as hell not buying a Yaris.

its the same thing that has been happening since last year!.... Toyota has seemingly stopped the advertising for the Yaris. I haven't seen a Yaris commercial for at least a year..idk if its the channels I watch or what but every 4th or 5th car commercial I see is for the Prius.... I guess toyota is making more $$ off of the dumb consumer that think that buying a Prius will save the planet and their wallets (when in fact the time that the yaris will pay for its self in gas savings is significantly less than with the Prius)

Personally I like not seeing a Yaris every 3rd car (like I see the Prius) it makes me feel more special for having one and much more excited for when I do see one! (especially another Bayou Blue!)

I think exchange rates play a big part in it. When the dollar drops in relation to the yen, export cars are not as profitable for Toyota.

That being said, Toyota did not sucessfully market the Echo either.

Yeah, the "2" doesn't seem to be selling "2" well. That's a bit of subcompact humor, folks. Don't forget to tip your servers.

It's a shame, actuall. I think the 2 is a great subcompact. I got great mileage when I reviewed it; sporty, comfortable. I'd be hard pressed not to replace the Yaris with one if my Yaris blew up tomorrow and I opted for another new car.

The Scion XD with an automatic is priced around $16,500.

Yet, it seems like I see more and more Yaris' everyday. Especially the HB. OTOH, maybe it's just psychosomatic; since I have one now I just notice them more often.
