Fuel smell after filling
HI, I have been having an issue with my Yaris/Belta 2009 VVT-i model. I get an extremely strong fuel smell outside the car and inside the car cabin only after fulling the tank (No drips or mess during fulling). And the smell is extremely strong while driving to the point where the fuel smell burns my eyes. There are no signs of drips on the fuel tank itself, the fuel return line was changed and the fuel pump was temporarily sealed off to see if it'll help the smell. After the car loses a bit of fuel from usage the smell goes away.
Help! Does anyone have any advice? Last edited by loricechris01; 12-02-2022 at 09:19 AM. |

Don't try to add more gas after the pump clicks off.

In that case I agree with the poster who said when filling the car with gas, don’t add any after the first click of the pump

Quote:
That can ruin the charcoal filter and the solenoid which turn things on and off in the system It’s very unwise to pump gas after the first click

if your filling anything made after the mid 90s beyond the first click(unless it clicks off VERY early) your fueling things that shouldnt have fuel in them
old stuff pre 80s often needs to be seriously topped up as the pumps are too sensitive for them and can stop crazy early if i was to place a guess your simply overfilling it and need to stop doing so, secondly the suspect would be the evap system or the tank to fuel seal both options are viable and its pretty easy to know which based on how long it takes for the smell to go away....does it come back on a hard right hand turn?..if so its the tank seal |

What he said
Overfilling will flood your fuel recovery system which is big buck$$.
